Been in the area since 1996 and this was actually the first time I ever went in there. At first we were super excited because everything looks awesome. The selection is gigantic too much to even confidently explore. We were greeted when we came in, super welcoming and informative. The guy kept telling us how the candles were ādouble scentedā so it would smell stronger, (or at least at all I would assume.) both my boyfriend and I only found one scent we really loved and we got a 22oz size (or so we think, but itās in a jar that you would get from a yankee candle store) there werenāt any ozās listed on the bottom and it was on a wall stocked FULL of candles for 22.99 but of all different sizes. (So you and I can both get the same candle, one small and one big but both pay the same price despite the size differenceā¦.weird.) Anyway, we got two of those and two cute chakra candles. Coming to almost 60 dollars with tax. When I was checking out, the guy says to us, āthatās all? You didnāt get a lot.ā As if I was supposed to spend an excessive amount of money. Which rubbed me the wrong way. You should be grateful for any customers who buy anything.
After taking the candles home to separate homes my boyfriend and i realized that we canāt smell the candles we got at all. Initially we thought our scenes of smell was limited after smelling all the candles at the store but nopeā¦itās day three now and the candles have been lit and re lit every day since we got home. We smell NOTHING. Itās actually wild and highly disappointing.
My boyfriend then looked online to see if candles lose their scent as they sit on shelves for a long time and it said that they do. So, I think because thereās SOOOOO many candles in that store that arenāt really moving, unfortunately they donāt smell at all, or if they do itās probably super light. So i donāt care how ādouble scentedā anyone says they are. They donāt smell at all. At least the ones we bought.
If you go in there looking for candles I would steer clear of that wall in the back or anything that isnāt holiday maybe? Iād assume theyāre made a little more regularly as the new seasons come along so theyāll have a newer shelf life. But I can be wrong. The ones out now could be from last year too cause we could barely smell some of those either. Or, stick to a place that moves candles more regularly. Itās an adorable spot and all, and if you like little statues and figurines they have some pretty ones in the back, but the candles and all the hype about how they burn evenly (which Iāll give them that, they do) and the ādouble scent,ā isnāt worth the money because it gives nothing. It gives a nice lighting if you turn out the lights thatās about it.
I had high hopes, but I could have gone to TJ Maxx or home goods and gotten more than one candle that burn way better and have way stronger scents for the same price unfortunately. But if you want a cool little place to walk around then this is a neat place.
Also, we go to house of candles all the time for Christmas gifts and stuff and theyāre always so thankful for us coming in there no matter how...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIāve been to a lot of interesting places as a spirit medium and while filming Dark Echoes Paranormal TV show for Amazon Prime Videoābut The Candle Shoppe of the Poconos is truly something special.
At first glance, it looks like a cozy little candle shop tucked away in the Pocono Mountains, but once you step inside, you realize thereās a lot more going on here. The candle selection is incredibleāseriously, over 300 scents, so the whole place smells amazing. Youāll 100% leave with at least one... probably more.
But hereās where it gets interesting: the building itself has a crazy backstory. It used to be a biological research lab, and during our investigation for Dark Echoes, letās just say I picked up on some really intense energy. We experienced some strange activity, and honestly, I wouldnāt be surprised if a few former āresidentsā are still hanging around. (**Hint - a few of these āresidentsā may not walk around on two feet!)
Whether youāre into candles, local history, or just enjoy a good spooky story, this place has something for everyone. I recommend checking it out and taking your time to soak it all in. Definitely one of the most unique places Iāve been, and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe least traditional of the candle shops in the area, but their double-scented candles canāt be beat! (Check out the fresh sage ones.) They have an abundance of wax melts and incense, as well. The building/home has an interesting history, and the kitschy basement tours are entertaining and educational.
Update: Their bathroom is no longer open to the public. We weren't able to peruse at all on our most recent visit as one of my kids needed to use the restroom when we arrived. (We are not local, so it's a long drive.) There is a Sheetz up the road, but it's an inconvenience especially if you're on a tight schedule and/or have little ones along. They still make the best candles, but this change puts a bit of a hindrance on exploring and detracts from the welcoming atmosphere. The staff are still very friendly, but denying bathroom access to young children is a huge pet peeve of mine. Needless to say, I grabbed just the main item I had come for instead of wandering and stocking up on candles and incense this time. Plan...
