Yesterday, I packed up Sita in her Giorgio Armani bug-out-bag and hauled her off to WinCo to get coffee and half & half, then Freddy's for her cat food. When we came back to the Gateway MAX stop, in the parking lot before the buses and trains on the sidewalk path a presumably Spanish as a first language speaker glanced down before I too noticed the heaped pile of feathers on the concrete. I walked over and put her wing in place and touched blood, then felt around her wing and noticed a bone. I ticket her under my arm and ran off with the female gull like I was Marshawn Lynch with a football when 'it's just him holding up the team' to the MAX train. The Seattle Seahawks lost an important game, eliminating the team from the NFL playoffs. I am not sure how this bird was injured. Few people have said, "a car or a train".
Sita was well behaved. She stayed in her bag and let me get the bird in a quiet comfortable place for her in my house in one of my spare bedrooms for the night after all attempts made yesterday were unsuccessful at getting her to the Audobon Society Audubon Society of Portland Wildlife Care Center yesterday.
I decided to call the female seagull, Ms. Blackwood from Top Gun. After I prayed the Rosary with her last night. Not touching her, just sitting beside her, resting, I decided I'd sing for her and play some music in the morning. My neighbor, fellow Montavillan, former Director or President of Montavilla Neighborhood Association, as well as formerly my Portland Community College professor, Mr. Michael Sonnleitner spoke with his wife at dinner last evening and called me back to tell me he would help me get Ms. Blackwell to Audobon Society in the morning. I sang a song that I sang for my grandmother at her memorial. I played a few Top Gun songs. I prayed the mysteries.
Michael picked Ms. Blackwood and I up; after I'd explained to he and Ms. Blackwood where an adult male seagull flew buy and smacked his right wing right at the shoulder against the side of my house a few summers ago. That seagull, he continued to fly, I shared. Then we made a trip in this snowy frozen inclement weather around the hills to get the seagull Ms. Blackwood the help she needs. We took photos, we filled out a form, I signed off on Ms. Blackwood the seagull's care and left my phone number on the form in anticipation to be invited to her release.
Ms. Blackwood will need surgery, her injury is one that she would have died from last night if she hadn't been picked up by my cat in a bag and I.
Now, we wait.
Thank you Audobon Society, thank you Mr. Sonnleitner, thank you concerned pedestrians, thank you Ms. Blackwood, thank you Mom, for helping me care.
Be well.
Peace...
Read moreI spent 3 days nursing a 4 week old baby squirrel from the brink of death after he was found in the driveway on a 100f+ day, his sibling already perished next to him. He was a fighter and managed to recover surprisingly well. We aptly named him Rocky. I thought i was doing the right thing by bringing him here, excited for the life ahead of him. They waited till after i filled out the paperwork, handed him over, and they took him into the back to tell me that depending on the species of squirrel, they were going to have to euthanize him, and that it was the right and humane thing to do. Murdering an innocent baby is not humane. Humans are the real invasive species, causing more damage to habitats and the earth than any other creature alive. They came back and told me he was the species they referred to. He was not injured or sick anymore, he was healthy and was going to open his eyes any day now. Only because of his species, nothing more. I asked for him back and they refused, saying i have no licensing or training to rehabilitate him myself. I am working on my bachelors in wildlife conservation, but if this is what they mean by conserving nature, i don't want to do this anymore. Rocky fought too hard to live to go...
Read moreI found a baby rabbit on my property who needed help and brought it in to the center. I was very sad for this tiny little animal and had a lot of feelings about the situation. Every person I met here greeted me with such kindness and warmth. I checked the box on the form asking for an update on the little rabbit but wasn't sure I'd here anything back. I did in fact hear back, in the form of a 3-plus paragraph response, which again was filled with kindness, compassion, and comfort. You can really tell that they care about animals and people in equal measure. I hope I never have to be in the position of bringing them an ailing animal again, but I'm comforted by the fact that if I have to,...
