LaDIFF — Local services in Richmond

My wife Dougie and I have been enthusiastic patrons of LaDiff for close to 10 years. When we moved into Riverside on the James, our first downtown/Shockoe Slip condo, in late 2005, we ventured into LaDiff to be greeted by the some of the most unique contemporary and quality furnishings and accessories most anyone could wish for. That, plus a talented, knowledgeable and most personable staff, made our shopping experience and evolving relationship extremely rewarding.

In 2008, we completely furnished a new condominium home in Vistas on the James. It's 2600 square feet evolved into a real showplace featured on downtown condo/loft tours and numerous publications including the Richmond Times Dispatch, R.Home Magazine and others. In large part, the style and quality of our LaDiff furnishings truly made the difference in capturing the eyes of most anyone who visited. Our home was a featured film set for the 2011 made for TV movie Christmas Kiss and in 2012 became the temporary residence of Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw during the months that he made Richmond home during the filming of the movie Lincoln.

When we decided to downsize in 2013, we returned to our first downtown residence in Riverside and decided to refurnish it. Again, our choice for furnishings brought us back to LaDiff for our third terrific experience with them. Andy and Sarah, owners and gracious hosts, as usual made us feel right at home. Rick, Bryan and the others on the sales staff are both very knowledgeable about their products and present as true design professionals. I do have to single out one very special person, in Dougie's and my opinion the best sales professional who we have had the pleasure of working with over the years, and that beautiful person is Bernadette. She has always greeted us with warm and enthusiasm, listened thoughtfully to our vision for our decor, patiently guided us through the amazing three floors of options and ideas, and made sure that we were always enthusiastically pleased with our ultimate selections.

I realize this a lot of material for this one post but I want to share the whole experience and, yes, the relationship that Dougie and I have with this terrific store and its owners and staff. If you haven't yet visited LaDiff, whether your tastes are traditional, mid-century modern, more or less contemporary, whatever the case, the uniqueness of the setting and the graciousness of its people, will give you the opportunity to add something special to your own homes.

On Saturday I purchased a wall unit at La Diff that was on clearance. I did not bring it home with me and made arrangements to pick it up some time this week. After realizing that it just wasn't going to work for me, I called my very nice sales person, Renee, and asked her to cancel the order. She told me that since it was a clearance item, she could not do that. After a couple of phone discussions with Renee this week trying to resolve the matter, I decided to go into the store today to see if I could cancel the order and get a refund. That turned out to be a very upsetting experience. Sarah the owner was obviously angry as soon as she approached me. She put the receipt in front of me and said....is that your signature? Things then went from bad to worse. I know the retail business is not easy and that it can be frustrating dealing with difficult customers. I am NOT a difficult customer. I just wanted to discuss the matter with her. She was so rude and accusatory that it was impossible to have a civil discussion. Among other things, she implied that I was one of those "chronic returners" who make life difficult for retailers. I understand the store has policies and rules for a reason. I was hoping maybe they would make an exception. I was given a gift card for the amount of the wall unit and I appreciate that. What I don't appreciate is the way I was talked to. I realize it was Friday at 5 pm and you were tired and maybe had a bad day Sarah. But that was just not nice. It was inappropriate and...
