I have been not only dissatisfied with these folks, I truly wish I could give them no stars. I have shared my life with rescue dogs for more than 30 years and have dealt with numerous humane society groups. And before trying to interact with Legacy - Rockwall, I have never once encountered any difficulties. I can tell you that these folks are the worst I've personally encountered. I completed the application and got an email in about 2 days (which is a rather slow response time for most rescue groups), and that was the last contact/reply from them I received. I was told that the foster family would contact me to arrange a meet and greet but that has never happened. Not a word. The website only works consistently with two browsers for filling out the application and the site is very buggy. The overall process to contact them is too long and drawn out. It is frustrating for those wishing to adopt! I had one exchange with them over the site not working with multiple browsers, and the person that responded was rather rude and tried to blame me for their issues. I get the strong impression that the folks in Rockwall have no clue how hard they are making it on themselves to find suitable adopting families, nor do they seem to care. If the folks at the main shelter in McKinney care about the reputation of Legacy Humane Society, they should really have a very long talk with the folks running the chapter in Rockwall and get some new folks who are not jaded, not rude, and who do not act "holier than thou" to potential...
Read moreFull transparency: my wife and I were foster parents with LHS while we were down in Texas and there have clearly been some low-star reviews here that supporters are trying to offset.
That said, I took the time to read all of the 1 and 2-star reviews posted here. I understand the frustration and where most of these folks are coming from. We were declined by different organizations getting our first dog, Jack, simply because we lived in an apartment at the time. It happens.
Try to keep things in perspective and understand LHS's Mission. They're trying to do the absolute best that they can for these animals. That means policies, procedures, and high standards. There were times that I was frustrated and I wasn't even try to keep the fosters that we had. Well, I could've kept Crosby -- man that dog was awesome!
Look, the animals aren't commodities and LHS isn't a doggie supermarket where you can grab a pup off the shelf and take it home like a box of cereal.
They also have operating costs that they need to cover and most of the adoption fee includes medicine to get the dogs healthy as well as the spay/neuter that the vets do at or near cost.
Comparing this (or any adoption, really) to buying from a breeder really is apples and oranges.
Zoom out, set aside personal frustrations/disappointment, and make objective comparisons if you care to. I think you'll find that LHS is as good, if not better, than many of other other...
Read moreI am a foster (4 years) and an adopter twice through Legacy HS. I love fostering with this group because of the willingness to help any animal that I ask about. All fosters are 100% volunteers. We give up a lot of free/family time and sometimes our own $ (by choice, not necessity) to help. It seems like some of the bad reviews were because they weren’t approved to get a certain dog. As a foster, we try the hardest to place a dog with the right family for that particular dog which changes with each individual dog’s needs. Most of the dogs that we get in are throw aways/unwanted and having come from an unstable environment. Our goal is to change that by placing in a forever home that is best for their needs. The adoptions all come with a 5 day trial and before that starts everyone is fully aware of what exactly is required especially if they aren’t spayed/neutered. The way that this rescue has managed to help so many in need and especially cover their medical care and yet still adopt out for a low fee is simply incredible and they definitely don’t get enough credit for all they accomplish. You really have no idea until you get involved. It’s also the best feeling in the world when you can help fix a dog either behaviorally or medically. Hands down an...
