This is probably the largest gym on FLW. So here is the compliment sandwich;
The Good: The gym has 4. Full courts for basketball. They use one as a volleyball court. The swimming pool is nice, clean and relatively well kept. There is a nice new functional fitness room, but unless you take a walk around the track (second floor) then you would never even know that it's there.
The Bad: The gym is right in the center of everything, so all of the trainees (AIT, Marines etc ) flood the gym and you can barely get a piece of equipment. I was once using the squat rack in the weight room and someone tried to take it while I was using it. There is a room for parents with small children and people just flood it. The amount of traffic in that gym is unbearable. Unless you're in there at 0500. But from 0430-0800 you HAVE yo wear PTs unless you are a civilian.
The ugly: The Army should be ashamed of the condition of the equipment. All the treadmills are either broken, make a ton of noise when you use them, or they skip when you try to run on them. All the cardio equipment is from like 2005. For a branch that prides itself on physical fitness they don't care about their equipment. The locker rooms are tight and not very clean and the sauna is like a shoe box.
Some more good: The staff is friendly and there is plenty of accessory equipment you can borrow from the front desk. You can buy water and other beverages and they take cash or card.
Sustains: Pool, Basketball Court, functional fitness room staff
Improves: New equipment, bigger weight room, new cardio equipment, renovation of the locker rooms possible steam room in...
Read moreDecent facility though a lot of lack of communication within the staff members giving mixed messages and contradictory information.
The facility seems clean and well organized with structured regulations and schedules and I can only speak to use of the pool.
I recently called in inquiring if a few expectant mothers and I could use the pool during “lap swim” allotment for relief at the end of the day and was told it would be no issue whatsoever.
However upon arrival, we were only allowed to utilize it that afternoon due to the misinformation and must provide a doctor’s note for future use since we were not swimming laps as well as authorization concerning accompanying children if child care was not available.
I completely understand needing to create a paper trail of authorization for staff to refer back to if questioned by superior management, but these requirements need to be communicated throughout the staff beforehand so they are not initially offering misinformation, contradicting each other and complicating a simple process.
We were also initially told to leave multiple times by the uninformed lifeguards before management rectified the situation and communicated the...
Read moreI have been to many base gyms over the years. I do think this is one of the better gyms I have been to. It covers a wide range of equipment for what you are trying to do, has a pool, has courts, and indoor track etc. There are gyms that have had more or larger weight rooms or cardio but have lacked something (or several things) completely. They did try and squeeze something in for everyone including parents with kids. Maybe not hitting 100% in each area. But they definitely made a strong attempt at taking everyone into consideration and accommodating. The staff has been friendly and extremely polite. Being a training base and such a good gym. In the winter it seems like it would get rather tight. But short of building a second gym of this caliber or doubling the size of this one. You have to have a little patience. And its only tight for a small window of time when considering the entire day. Some times you can complain but don't know what you have until you travel to another base. Overall they did a great job with this gym. Even though there are some areas that can...
