Fort Sam Houston โ San Antonio, TX||||$20 a day concrete slab RV site with electric/water/sewer/picnic table/ grill||||Pros:||+ Located in the heart of San Antonio, itโs an easy taxi ride or bus ride into town||+ On base gym is within walking distance (approx. 1 mile from campground)||+ Temperature controlled bathhouses||+ Handicap shower stall available||+ Grill at each site||+ Propane onsite (though it can be tricky to get the people to refill)||+ Laundry - $1.50 for wash $1.50 for dry||+ Spacious sites, all pull through making set up a breeze||+ Playground for kids centrally located||+ Rentals available (M-F) at Outdoor Rec one street over||+ Golf course on base||+ We got a ton of tv channels with our antenna ||||Cons:||- Bathhouses are very moldy, though kept up they need a good pressure washing ||- Internet is poor, they have 2 hot spots at the main office but they go dormant constantly and have no range||- We are growing accustom to the sound being associated with on base campgrounds โ trains run nearby about 2 times an hour ||- Fair amount of long term residence due to housing shortage on base||- They do not take card payments on Sat/Sun only weekdays so bring exact change for your stay if you are only going to be here for the weekend||- The roads on base are terrible, take it S L O W or you will damage something on your rig||||||This campground seems to be super busy with people coming in and out constantly. Their system is a bit archaic for keeping track of the reservations so we would suggest you call and verify your site a week out. Itโs not a big deal for us in the B to move from one site to another due to a failure to book properly but it would be frustrating in...
ย ย ย Read moreThis is one of the best FamCamps in the MWR network. When you hear FamCamp, this is a family setting campground. From a huge playground to the long dogrun and a plethora of dog waste cans and bags throughout and the very large spaces. Overall, there really is not much (trains) to complain about. The staff are super friendly, the maintenance crew is AMAZING, and the camp hosts are easy to get along with. There is so much to see and do on and off post. I'm not sure what you can really look down upon. There are extra (huge too) playgrounds less than 2 miles away. The Equestrian Center is just down the street. You can search for activities on base, but it's so plentiful that this is an awesome choice for staying short or long-term. Full support with propane refill is as easy as dropping off the tank and picking up and paying later in the day. Washing machines are $2, and dryers are $1.75 (get quarters from inside the office). Price per month is one of the cheapest in MWR, too.
The huge downside that's been hard to get used to for me is the train that will blow their horn for 1 to 4 seconds for at least 3 separate crossings during each and every pass as they go between the rv park and the hospital. This happens at all times throughout the day and all night long. It's not just one train a day either, more like 10 trains...

The AFI policy that you can't stay past 30 days is overlooked often for active duty who collect full BAH and homestead at this park. This is an Army mis-management we see over and over again. The Air Force has stepped it up and have made homesteader's move, but it's abused on the Army side. Also, make sure you get an email confirmation of your reservation, because reservations often get messed up by personnel. This has happened to us, and we had to leave earlier than what we reserved. Also be prepared to move to numerous slots if you stay for a more than a few days. They refuse at times to move their grid around on the computer to accommodate for lengthier stays. We've had good and bad experiences at this park, but the final straw was calling this week to be told there are no openings unless someone cancels. I have a friend currently staying there who confirmed nearly half of the slots are sitting empty. This is ludicrous! Many retired veterans end up with last minute VA appointments and could use this park if it were better managed. Someone from high up the food chain needs to pay attention to what goes on...
