I had the best time at Watermelon Days at the Oasis Camel Dairy.
This is really a hidden gem in San Diego County (Ramona); great for both adults and kids (about 3 and up, I'd think).
You can tell that its a small, family run operation right away. The staff is so friendly, down to earth, happy and clearly loves their job and loves the camels.
The camels are obviously well taken care of; they are relaxed and so friendly.
This place manages to fit so many activities into one day! Its small size makes it easy to see everything with minimal walking/time in between activities. The day is well schedules, on time and organized.
I got to/did: -feed a camel a watermelon (free with admission of $15, parking is free and since the farm is small, the lot is close). -pet and hang out with the camels (they are so friendly) -take a selfie with them -ride a camel ($10 for a 3 minute ride but so much fun... they have the best awkward gate). Ask for Camelot... the Cadillac of Camels! -learn more fun facts about camels then I ever thought possible! -check out some turkeys (they race them at the SD County Fair) -watch the exotic bird show (the host is so entertaining and funny) -see a kid's magic show (it was interactive and the kids loved it) -participate in a watermelon spitting contest -feed sheep ($1) -test and purchase some camel milk lotion ($8 for 2oz), soap ($6 for 2.5oz) and lip balm ($4) (made with the milk from the dairy) -enjoy some freshly spun cotton candy ($3) and BBQ (you can bring in your own food) -check out the gift shop where you can buy everything from camel milk chocolate (imported from Dubai), t shirts, charms, magnets, stuffed toys and various other camel goodies! Most importantly, I fell in love with these camels! They were so fun!
The only drawbacks are: it can be a bit tricky to spot off the highway, they are only open very specific days/times (and judging by how busy it was on a Friday, I imagine the weekend crowds are huge), they are not licensed to sell the camel milk.
I can't wait to go back for Pomegranate Days and...
Read moreA MUST SEE! Discovered this place years ago and always look forward to returning! Nine miles east of Ramona on Hwy. 78. Great educational, fun trip for ages 3 and up. Reasonable admission prices; camel rides extra. Bring cash (easiest); credit cards accepted in the gift shop. Tours, camel rides, petting farm, exhibits, & animal show that the animals enjoy performing. 20 dromedary camels (friendly and cuddly), parrots, babydoll sheep, miniature donkeys, horses, herding farm dogs, meandering chickens, and racing turkeys (funny!) Presentations are educational, then feed, pet and interact with the animals. Kids love this place! I saw so many happy faces. My grandson and I took a memorable camel ride. Small gift shop offers rare camel hair yarn skeins, knit caps, a variety of gift items, and my favorite- RARE MILK Camel Milk Skincare. Made with all natural and organic camel milk, there are lotions, soaps, bath bombs and more. This esthetician's favorite is the lotion with frankincense and myrrh. I highly recommend the Oasis Camel Dairy and the products they sell. Ice cold water and chips available. REAL (professionally trained) service dogs only. All other dogs (even emotional support pets) will not do well on this farm as the animals that live on this farm need to have their personal space and territory respected. Temperatures are high in this area, so please leave your dogs in the comfort if their own home, or in your air...
Read moreWe got to the dairy yesterday (pomegranate day)and had prepaid online. We had several people in front of us who were buying tickets right then and had TONS of questions. There was a separate line for prepays, but the prepay person was helping these people as well. I'll be frank...dont waste your time if you dont have kids. As a couple we spent maybe 45 minutes and walked out. This event is very kid friendly, but if you dont have kids...I'd pass. The camels are fun and friendly. I wish they had a milking demonstration, the opportunity to see how the farm works, and stuff like that. Maybe even a camel race would be cool? The circus and shows we didnt watch because it's for kids and very crowded. $15 an adult is a lot to spend to feed one camel and some sheep. I was going to buy some camel goods, but the shop is very small and only a few people can fit.
I'd suggest a couple things: have a family package for tickets, so if you are just a couple of adults, you can pay for what you'll actually do (less than a family, who is likely to spend hours at the shows and things) *have someone only checking in prepaid(and nothing else) *have a large board of faqs or one "question answerer" so those people dont make the line super long *more bathrooms, as most people drive from far away
Free parking was...
