**Group Campsite #1 is not private. People come and go through there often and the last time I stayed there were even city workers walking directly through my campsite..... had to move a bundle of wires and garbage from the site before I could even think about making a fire... *edited to 1 star. I wrongly assumed that by bringing this to your attention it would help solve the issue. So I mistakenly stayed here again. This time a couple people working for the city stopped to walk directly through the campsite while I'm having a fire and then parked their truck at the end of the entrance to this particular campsite and sat there watching me for 2 HOURS. The next day another truck showed up and pulled up as close as he could get to my car to tell me that I had to leave because they needed to remove a tree. When I informed him I had paid for the campsite he was surprised. He gold me he was working for the city of Sandstone.
There is a VERY LARGE sign stating this is a campsite and to make your reservation online before occupying. I reserved this campsite on the official website of the city of Sandstone. And yet they failed to collaborate with whoever these people were to avoid this issue. Again. Thank you so much for your lack of communication or...
Read moreSite of the famous old Sandstone quarry (1886-1942), now abandoned and with only a few relicts remaining. There are several engaging storyboards posted here. The Kettle River here is very pretty, it's banks lined with dramatic boulders and humming with the quiet roar of rapids. A short distance away is an old iron trestle railway bridge with beams so spidery looking one wonders how it bears the weight of a full sized train with three engines and 100+ cars (that crossed the road before me as I drove into town).
Apparently the sheer, tall, nearly vertical old quarry rock walls are a great training ground for climbers and on this day they were clearing brush from top to bottom. In preparation for the winter season they were also piping running water over the cliff face, forming frozen waterfalls overnight. Perfect for learning ice climbing!
The beauty and interest level here is a 5 star rating but am pulling one point owing to poor trails maintenance, potholes and mud. Highly commended for the...
Read moreWe camped here and it was terrifying (to say the least). There was no police presence the entire weekend, there were squatters everywhere (SO MANY SQUATTERS). They would sleep in their vehicles all over the campground and park and get up and walk in the woods all through the night. We believe one even came and stole food and drinks from our campsite while we were hiking at Banning State Park (which was perfect!) because we noticed some things missing and found it in the garbage the next day.. We had to keep out fire fully lit all night just in hopes that they would stay away.. I tried contacting the park office and have had NO response. We were at campsite 1. I would not recommend this place UNLESS you are actively practicing the...
