Sturtevant Falls trail from the Chantry Flats Picnic Area parking lot is a blast. One of LA's popular hiking destinations in Santa Anita Canyon. The San Gabriel Mountains have so many epic trails to go explore, yet this trailhead is in our top 3. A must visit and experience yourself destination. We showcased this incredible place on our youtube channel @hikebytes. The title says it all, "Sturtevant Falls and Chantry Flats is NOW OPEN after 4 year closure." Opened October 2, 2024 from the sources we read. The Gabrielino trail has many junctions from this spot, more to explore for the adventurer.
Parking is free, but you must display a day Adventure Pass you can purchase from Andy's Pack Station, just a block down from the top lot for $5, or buy an annual pass from another retailer of these Adventure Passes. Big 5, REI., and the Angeles National Forest website. They sell them for $30 annually. We highly recommend this adventure day trip if your near LA, Orange County or San Diego counties. I have included some pictures of some of the highlights of this experience. There is cold drinks, snacks, beer and wine. There are even bathrooms at the parking lot and by the trailhead. The hike is very enjoyable and definitely safe for kids and adults as the pathways are pretty open and flat (please still watch the little ones). This trail has lots of trees, over flow of bushes, shade, rocks, and boulders. I have seen anything from bears, deer, snakes, squirrels, and lots of hikers with dogs.
This short but lovely hike will take you to a waterfall. Years back when I first started hiking this waterfall was so full and beautiful, sad to say that these days the waterfall is still flowing but just not as luscious.
The end of the hike is a bit on the tough part, what goes down....must come up lol. That last half mile going back up is steep and can be a killer on a hot day (always hydrate) but once done you can reward yourself with a snack or meal at the cafe located at the top parking lot! (Check for hours of...

As you hike the wide trail up Santa Anita Canyon. Rock hopping is necessary at a few creek crossings, The scenery was gorgeous with running streams and trees that surround you entirely so there was not much direct sun light. Beautiful rock formations and lovely sounds of birds chirping. Lots of spots to capture great photos. I also used another trail to head up to the top of the water fall, was easy hike but the trail was narrow, but behind the water fall is another waterfall and it so beautiful... To get to the hiking trail : Take the 210 Freeway to Arcadia, east of Pasadena. There is a lot mosquitos, the trail is mark with a sign easy to follow the trail, and is easy hiking trail.
