I grew up next to the Truckee on Park street, and I will tell you now that the homeless are not to be reckoned with. We had numerous break in attempts and a couple successful where they were actually in the house taking things in our sleep.
Aside from that, this beautiful river offers miles of walking trail, as well as potential prospecting. The river contains just flakes of gold but it adds up if you know what you are doing. Plenty of people raft here, and with so many people always around, it is hard to get yourself caught in a tough spot.
Police used to drive through and check the riverside at night, but I dont think they do that routine anymore. People have been hacked to death by machetes recently, as well as stabbings even in daylight. It is hard to keep to yourself as well, considering most of the homeless are extremely drunk and take it the wrong way.
