Let me give you some background about me. I am a manager at a retail store that recently I have been called into for extra work because another manager was leaving. I also have a 2 year old daughter, and my fiancé also works. So I am constantly balancing babysitting, work, and school. And I end up not checking my email EVERY day.
I have all the required credits for my AA and decided to go back for 2 classes online to replace old classes with better grades. Something came up with my financial aid and it ended up being finalized the week classes started, which meant that my parents paid out of pocket my tuition so I could continue my classes; with the expectation to be paid back.
On April 6th I was sent an email telling me I would not receive any financial aid. I opened that email on April 7th, at 11pm at night. April 7th is the last day to withdraw with a 100% refund. I have been under the impression that you have had to withdraw from your classes in person, I guess NOW with this new ctc link you can drop them online. So on Monday(since the school wasn't open on the weekend) I went in and dropped my class(since my other one was dropped before that for a reason I could also lay into), and sent emails and made phone calls to multiple people(those that picked up were very kind) asking what I could do, if I could do anything, to get that 100% refund. I was informed that I could request this one class back dated 3 days so I could qualify for the 100% refund(2 of those days being a weekend).
I just got off the phone being told they wouldn't do it. I'm not upset they didn't do it, I'm furious that the INSTANT I picked up the call Vicki Moore had a very negative tone and I felt talked down too. I have invested thousands of dollars into this school. And three years of my time, I understand the school not being able to do something for me; but the lack of professionalism bewildered me. So I said something, I said "I don't appreciate the attitude your throwing me, I understand you can't do anything but the situation is so messed up that I'm upset I'm getting screwed over in another way. And now you're being rude to me as I've been polite in asking you and your superior, IF anything could be done. I appreciate you dealing with this and seeing if there's anything you can do but I expected more professionalism from you." To which she replied, "well i think you'll find in life what goes around comes around. I expected more professionalism from you as well."
Unbelievable. So now I'm being scolded for speaking up for myself when I'm being mistreated. When all I did was ask around to see if anything could be done. I have a 3.0 GPA, I'm not the best student but I'm not a lazy/don't do the work kind of student. I am not a confrontational person AT ALL. In fact I am currently crying because I am so offended by how I was treated.
If this is behavior that's supported by the Dean and staff at Spokane Falls Community College then I suggest every current and future students reconsider other colleges and universities in the area. Or just avoid calling staff and faculty when you...
Read moreI’m originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico a U.S. territory, and we are U.S. citizens by birth. That’s why I was shocked and deeply disappointed when I received a letter from Spokane Falls Community College asking me to bring in my green card.
I showed up with my U.S. birth certificate, Social Security card, and valid Washington State driver’s license. When I arrived, a blonde woman at the front desk greeted me. I told her, “I received a letter asking me to bring in a green card.” She laughed and said, “That was me.”
I explained, “I don’t have one " she looked surprised and disgusted then I said" I’m a U.S. citizen.” Her demeanor immediately shifted. She looked at me with disgust and seemed genuinely upset. She took my U.S. passport and asked, “How did you even get this?” I calmly explained that I am a U.S. citizen by birth and that Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory. She became visibly nervous, flipped her computer screen toward me, and said, “It just says Puerto Rico how would I know?” I responded, “As you know it's a US territory .”
That moment was humiliating and disheartening. I had never been treated like a foreigner in my own country before. I had dreams of attending Spokane Falls, but that interaction made me change course completely.
Ironically, I want to say thank you because of that experience, I decided not to attend Spokane Falls and instead joined the United States Air Force, where I’ve proudly served ever since.
Let this be a reminder to all institutions: ignorance is not an excuse, especially when working in education. If you don’t know that Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, you shouldn’t be the one checking citizenship documents. This happened couple years ago but I can't forget and finally had to...
Read moreOverall a good school. I graduated in 2014 and Transferred to EWU. I never had a problem with any of my instructors, however at the time I went the math department was so-so and I took all my math at SCC. A&P here is good, but I have been told that Microbiology is much better to take at SCC instead of SFCC.
I wasn't a big fan of the advisors when I was going here because they wanted me to take classes I didn't really need. I also had to take another Math Class to fulfill a math/science credit despite taking Statistics and Intro Bio, and A&P 1 and 2.
If you know what program you are going into, talk with the department head of that program to find out the right classes and credits that you need.
Make sure you finish your AA here before transferring to EWU. My friend was 2 classes short of her AA before she transferred and EWU made her retake 2 classes before she could graduate because they would not accept the classes from SFCC as substitutions at EWU unless...
