This was hands down the worst dining experience I’ve had in quite some time. We made a reservation thinking we were going to dine upstairs in the quaint mansion dining area. Instead, they put us downstairs in the pub which was extremely noisy even with only maybe 5 people down there. The bartender was our server. He was a nice guy, but service was slow as he had to service the other guests and make drinks for the entire restaurant. They didn’t have the fixings for even standard liquor drinks. We ordered the maple, bourbon bacon brussel sprouts for our appetizer. There was no maple, barely any bacon and they were boiled. Nothing is more disgusting than boiled brussel sprouts. We ordered the scallops and lamb for dinner. The scallops came out cold and it was a fennel salad. Literally. If you like fennel you’ll love this dish but it did not come out as described. The lamb was supposed to be a tenderloin with a carrot and tomato chutney of sorts and pearl couscous. I asked for it medium rare. When the dish came out it was like a ragu. The lamb tasted like it was made in the crockpot, there we no carrots and the dish was so bland not even salt and pepper could save it. Also, it was not medium rare since it was stewing in the crockpot all day. It was edible, but it tasted like nursing home or hospital food. And, they were charging $30+ a dish. It was the most expensive and disappointing check I’ve ever had to pay. The bartender said he could take things off the check. I was in the service industry for 10 years and I didn’t want a comped check and I know businesses are struggling with limited staff right now. I paid it, said how underwhelmed we were and that we would never be back. And trust me, you couldn’t pay me to go back. Note to Box Hill- if you’re going to market yourself as an upscale restaurant and charge upscale prices make sure the product value is there. Also,...
Read moreI visited the venue for an outdoor wedding and reception. The space is beautiful but the food was mediocre. The 3 Hors d’oeuvres were good but the servers didn’t do a good job of spreading them around. Every time they got to our side there were out or only had one left even after we requested more they still served us less and came over with one left. I chose Chesapeake chicken with lump crabmeat for my entree and was served dry chicken breast wrapped in prosciutto with 3 tiny pieces of lump crab meat from a can sitting on the side. The assorted desserts were the best part of the meal. The reception was over after the DJ was forced to turn his music down due to a neighbor threatening to call the police for noise violations at an afternoon wedding. This was my first time attending a reception where I was required to pay for soft drinks as part of a cash bar and never knew that was a package option so I was definitely...
Read moreBox Hill Mansion for dining is a hidden gem in York. My husband and I enjoy great food and have found that in York, going to Lancaster and Harrisburg makes it possible. BUT, Box Hill is now our local favorite for outstanding menu selections prepared perfectly, incredible views and ambience and attentive service. This was our 3rd time and it never fails to exceed expectations. We had the crab and corn chowder, that although a tiny bit thick, had a sweet, tasty flavor. The Duck Reuben appetizer was a pleasant surprise - truly mastered. The beet/kale salad and the Caesar salad are both great for getting some greens in and the Caesar salad was especially good with the addition of pine nuts and sun dried tomatoes, topped with the crispiest croutons. For entrees, the Short Ribs were super tender and delicious. The wine selection is nice and the cocktails creative for the season. Take it from 2 foodies, make your reservation...
