Tama finally got another source for groceries. Is it a good thing? Perhaps. Options are always nice. ESPECIALLY when reliable service is key in your life. Many of us in today’s world need as little hiccups as possible. Though Hyvee may have a few services a large corporate company can offer vs good old dependable grocery stores like Fareway, Ive come to realize it comes at a cost. This past weekend was a perfect example of what happens to companies once they go big. A couple of weeks ago the uTama Hyvee advised my mother she could order a cake from Grinnell Hy-Vee to be delivered to the Tama Hyvee. My mother was so happy the service was being extended to Tama residence and placed her order as instructed. Which meant it entailed calling the Grinell Hyvee Whom confirmed the order and all was right with the world. My mother made arrangments with the nursing home with a time slot as to when she would arrive for my grandmother‘s birthday visit. Having just gotten over cancer herself and my grandmother having managed to survive sepsis just two weeks ago and her dementia progressing rapidly, this was going to be a great birthday. She wanted it to be perfect. Grandma loves yellow roses, so her cake was ordered accordingly. I digress, when my mother arrived at the scheduled pick up time there was no cake. The manager in Tama had no idea to expect a delivery from Grinnell Hyvee or , as GHV worded it, Tama never picked up the cake at required pick up time. So who dropped the ball? Well According to GHV they spoke with someone at THV on Friday. So zero documentation and communication. Also if the cake was to be picked up by my mother at 10am in Tama, then why did GHV not call THV asking why they hadnt picked up the cake? They also had my mothers number. Sadly along with an ‘im sorry’ the only solution was for my mother to postpone our gathering until HYVEE could find someone to get it to TAMA. There was too much already set in motion for that to work. I know deep down how hurt she was when she had to pull a frozen cake out of hyvees freezers to present at this fortunate birthday. Did grandma know the difference? Maybe. Maybe not. We are blessed to have our loved ones together, more so through these unsure times. For that we are grateful. So the next time i want to create a timeless memory, ill know despite that smile in every aisle I’ll know with HyVee I cannot have my cake and eat it too, service AND reliablility. And Hyvee, if you read this, that was strike number three. I lived through the other two cakes. I do understand in human error, but...
