Coming here for my nieces birthday brought back fond memories of the old Starlight Skate off of 45th street... Only Sk8away doesn't smell of spilt pop and vomit (thank God). Everyone on staff was absolutely fantastic, helpful and accomodating! Especially the older gentleman who was skating particularly well, who happened to be very sweet. Thank you for checking on me that last time I fell - a dress at my age on skates probably wasn't a good choice, as was landing on my left knee and wrist the way I did. But with my bursitis flared up it was either land that way or dislocate my hip and who wants to be THAT relative that has to get carted off via ambulance at a 9 yr old's party? And fyi, I have since recovered (save perhaps my pride somewhat, since my dress DID fly up and reveal a little more than I was comfortable with) - so no harm done! I do wish you could rent inline skates there, which is really my one and only major complaint. I can skate on rollerblades, but to say I struggle on regular skates would be the understatement of the century. I know my fiancé wished there was more to do as far as the "arcade" was concerned, especially since you could win tickets and cash them in for a prize. We ended up combining all the ones we won with his brother and his kiddos and they got one prize at the end, which was a giant inflatable hammer.
The party was nice, the workers were all helpful and friendly and willing to go above and beyond to make my niece's day special. It was also very AFFORDABLE, unlike some other places in town that my future mother-in-law looked into before the birthday girl asked for a skating party last minute (cough skyzone cough cough cough). I saw they had different things on different nights advertised on the giant TV by where you got your skates at as well, so maybe I will have to invest in some inline skates again and start going one or two nights a week. Would be a fun way to shed the rest of the baby weight I'm having a hard to...
Read moreReminds me of my childhood! Roller skating is good fun, and this place has all the elements of what I remember from other places. Security entrance door where you need to be buzzed in. The distinct chemical smell, reminiscent of the paint they used on the brick hallways of my grade school. The few arcade games with tickets and overpriced prizes. What I appreciated was the transparency in what each tickets actual cash value is (I believe $0.01/ticket), as well as the option to simply purchase any of the process outright with cash. The overpriced vending machine ($3/bottled water or soda). No half sizes for shoes (whole numbers only).
The actual skating is always a great time! They do all the fun activities like Limbo, hokey pokey, etc. They have music and light shows and disco balls. The rink itself is a good size with 3 exit/entrances. Lockers, shoe cubbies, and a wall of coat hangers seems adequate.
Staffing might be a bit lacking during peak hours. It took a few minutes for us to get in. And then another 5 minutes to get slates, even though we were the only ones waiting. Then we had to do the waiting game again because we didn't realize we had to buy a different ticket since we wanted a "skate mate" for my 5-year old. I'm sure it's a family run small business, so staffing is limited and you gotta give them a bit of grace for that. But just just be prepared for that and pay for all the things you want the first time around to...
Read moreMy family had a blast here. We hadn't been skating in years and after our visit we decided to make it a more regular thing. Most of the employees were very nice, courteous, and helpful. Especially the older gentleman that was the "instructor" I guess it's called. He taught us how to skate backwards and paid attention to everyone on the floor. My nephew, unfortunately, accidentally came from behind and knocked him down. The instructor was more concerned about falling on top of and hurting the child than he was about hurting himself. Thankfully everyone was fine. The only things that could make me give 5 stars would be 1) More/better arcade games 2) better laces on the skates (some were frayed to the point of not being able to thread them) and 3) All day skate pass (if there is such a thing I...
