I love this place so much. I had a wonderful day there with my kids. I want to take a moment to emphasize the whirlpool warning sign.
You can go out into the stream no problem in most of the parts I've been because of all the big rocks and you can touch/ see the bottom. Well I brought my 4 and 6-year-old today. Of course they had life jackets on... But why would I wear one it you can touch the bottom. It's just I didn't realize that a whirlpool could be that strong.. my daughter couldn't fight against it to swim towards me when I asked her. When I realized it, I swam towards her and then there was a drop off where I couldn't touch the bottom at all... And then it it started pulling me. So I was trying to get my daughter away from it but she's just so little she's four. And I couldn't get us both out by swimming against it. So I was just pushing her away as hard as I could, which wasn't working. Thankfully I was close enough to the shoreline that I could use my last bit of energy to grab onto a rock and pull us both over. But that's why I want to tell this story and point out that spot. It's right by shore but yet I couldn't touch the bottom. And I wasn't strong enough to swim against it for maybe another 60 seconds... I was out of breath, getting very tired and getting nowhere... So scary.
Just want everyone to be aware of the danger especially bringing their little humans and dogs. The picture I'm showing is where it is that dark spot by that tree. The whirlpool moves into that area and I didn't notice that before my daughter was getting close to it.
My daughter didn't even realize what was happening I don't think... But she could tell I was scared and I emphasized how important is that they wear their life jackets. I won't let them in the water without it...
If my baby stepped down in the wrong spot without the life jacket, she'd be gone. I couldn't save her if I didn't have one either because I'd be gone too.
Like ..I would always picture myself jumping in and saving my kid if they fell because I can swim. I'm not the best swimmer but I always thought I'd be able to save my kid. Clearly ignorant. I'm always in awe of the power of water and yet somehow forget how many lives it's taken. Well I got some *humility today. The water is very strong, even where it moves slow. My body couldn't fight much longer trying to go that way.
Anyway, long story. Just everyone be cautious of the depths where you're exploring if you decide to go in the water. This scare happened earlier in the day so we still had a really nice time after that. Went and explored other spots and took a hundred pictures...
Read moreHave visited Dave’s Falls in Amberg many times and it remains one of our favorite falls to visit in Marinette County. It is located a short distance south of Amberg WI and immediately off of USH 141 for easy in and out access. The park is well maintained, has rustic bathrooms, and plenty of picnic tables with outdoor grills to use if needed. The path to the falls is very easy to walk and would allow for wheelchair to at least where the stairs are. Once at that location, if you’re unable to go down the 25 or so stairs, there is a nice bench to sit and simply listen to the waterfalls! Once down by the falls, there are some uneven and tricky points to walk over but nothing all too difficult so just be careful. Amazing to see and hear. Cool rock formations all around to take in while hiking as well. Plenty of parking if you arrive early and there is a $5 park entry fee that must be paid if you don’t have an annual sticker. This day pass can be used at ALL of the other county parks in Marinette County for the day so that is a plus! Highly recommend this as a stop if you in the area and or looking for a great place to relax and enjoy...
Read moreA beautiful place! It's a fairly short walk from the parking lot to the stairs that take you down near the water. Very rocky terrain with exposed tree roots in areas of the trails. There's a small bridge that crosses the water with trails on the opposite side. There is a small area to play in the water. I don't know how deep it gets or, how fast the water is moving. There were children in the shallow water near the bank with their mom watching over them. There were people fishing from the rocks and the banks of the river. I'm 61 with some health issues, and this place was worth every...
