There have been exactly 4 weeks in 25 years I haven't had a dog. They couldn't have had an adopter more willing; I was interested in two, and the unsmiling, deeply unpleasant blonde who condescended to explain the procedure didn't put me off. Gio showed me through the kennels and was great. I'm walking outside, deciding between the two when I see a third dog, sitting with a volunteer. This beautiful, clean and obedient pit won me over, and the volunteer had great things to say. I found the one I wanted! Returned inside and told them my choice. A young woman, whose customer service skills made the blonde look like a charm school graduate had other ideas. As a reasonable man, had she explained calmly and professionally this dog had behavioral problems making him an unsuitable choice I'd have chosen one of the other two. What she did was command my presence at her window and with peculiar relish tells me If this dog is with another he'll attack her and send her to the emergency room. Is that what I want? No, and neither do I want to adopt a dog from the likes of you. I left with nothing. The volunteer, who spent a lot of time with this dog, was incensed at what the shelter worker had to say and went in to confront her. I drove away. A shelter dog could be in a new home this morning. This shelter needs to rethink how it communicates with the public and who it chooses to represent them and advocate for their dogs. I met and spoke with four volunteers, all of whom were walking dogs and were warm, friendly and as skilled dealing with people as they were with dogs. Unfortunately they are not the ones with whom you will do the transaction. I will never return here.
It has been several hours since I posted this. It should be noted I had just, a couple days previous, put down my beloved canine companion. It is possible I am letting my grief cause me to overreact. The facts are correct as stated. I dealt with these facts with less than my usual equanimity, however, and wouldn't want my experience to influence another in their decision to adopt a dog from this shelter. It's about homes for these dogs, after all. And there were some bright lights in the place, and beautiful dogs, deserving of loving homes. Living in Brooklyn I will find one closer to home. Those of you in Suffolk County do come here. No living creature deserves a...

Read moreI got a kitten from here for my two-year-old son and they told me I couldn't take her home because she was going to get spayed then I got a phone call from them the day that I was going to pick her up saying that I couldn't come pick her up because she got surgery on her eye and that she has a couple of stitches. They failed to tell me that they took her whole eye out!! I found out when I opened the box that they sent her home in Now I don't mind that she has one eye but the lack of communication with these people and them having attitude when I was calling them to check on the cat was almost as if they were annoyed that I was calling. Not only did they do a botched job on her they had this cat since August and this cat had an infection in her eye that bad that she needed it removed and they did nothing about it until she was getting adopted.. why is that? Now her other eye almost looks like it's crying and they sent me home with antibiotics because she got spayed.. They wanted to keep her for a couple more days and I said no that I was going to pick her up the next day. I just have this feeling that I couldn't leave her there anymore. She's a very scared cat like she almost didn't have any human...
