What a fantastic experience! Today was my first time at an outdoor range, but it was also the best shooting experience Iāve had since I started two years ago. From when I arrived and went to the registration building, I was greeted by Katherine, who kindly helped me with an ammo purchase as well as checked me in. I was actually traveling with my dog and Katherine was extremely kind as to offer to watch him and keep in the air conditioned building for the 2 hours I would be there. She really loves dogs and my dog was so content to be taken care of by Katherine. And now onto the shooting experience! I brought my shotgun and pistol to try out both their rifle/shotgun range, as well as their pistol range. I first shot the shotgun to see if my iron sights were zeroed correctly. I shot paper targets at 100 yards using 1600 fps slugs, which are the only shell type you can use on the rifle range. You can use other shells on the clay ranges. Gary, one of the RSOs at the rifle range was so kind to take care of me. Gary did his safety briefing but also sat next to me acting as my personal shot spotter! As I was shooting slugs at 100 yards for the first time, I didnāt know what to expect. However, with Garyās help spotting, i quickly and happily realized that my iron sights were indeed zeroed perfectly from the factory. I never knew this as the farthest I shot the shotgun was 25 yards at an indoor range. Gary also saw that two of my shots actually hit the same hole! At 100 yards, which is shocking for me.
After shooting 15 rounds of slugs, I moved over to the pistol range. There I was met by RSO Allan. Again, my experience was incredible. Allan let me know I have a choice of shooting steel or paper, and at various distances up to about 50 yards. I shot steel for the first time ever and loved it. Just hearing the clang of lead on steel was so satisfying. No need to squint to see if my shot hit the target. Next, I pulled Allan aside and asked if he could help me zero my optic. Allan kindly said yes and I told him that I zeroed my optics at 25 yards using a laser bore sight. Allan set me up to shoot paper at 7 yards, which I thought was too close as I normally train at 10 yards. Allan said that even if I zeroed at 25 yards, it would have minimal effect on accuracy at 7 yards. I first shot standing and free handed and seemed to need to do a āholdoverā aiming about 3ā to compensate for the closer shooting distance. That seemed to work for me. However, Allan did a sitting bench rest shot while using a sand bag as a pistol brace. I was shocked to see he hit the bullseye for his one and only try with my pistol. I asked if he did a holdover aiming and he said no. Just point of aim was point of impact. So I then took over and copied Allanās method of sitting bench rested with a sandbag brace (all these shooting aids are available to all shooters making this range so convenient and the best value for your time snd money). I couldnāt believe I was shooting extremely tight groups right in the inner circle of the bullseye. Iāve never done that before. So, Allan proved to me that my zeroing at 25 yards was spot on for even 7 yards. His help also proved to me that my āvalueā priced optic was actually perfectly fine and easily held zero for the 150 rounds of 10mm used during my session. I was elated to learn that about my pistol and even that my $200 trigger upgrade was worth it and even impressed Allan.
I know this was a very long review but I think Long Island Shooting Range deserves it. Iāve been to nice ranges in PA that were very helpful too, but this range was by far the best overall shooting experience so far. If you think itās not worth the 1.5-2hr drive from NYC, just try it once. Iām certain you will come to the conclusion that LISR is the best experience and value for the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy wife and I visited Long Island Shooting Range of Brookhaven today for a lesson with Gary and had a fantastic experience which far surpassed our expectations. We went to acquire new skills and knowledge and to gain experience with some aspects of shooting sports that were new to us.
Gary's instruction was clear and detailed, and he showed great patience and encouragement. He was willing to answer all of our questions and to offer feedback on form and technique. We arrived having only very basic knowledge and left with a solid foundation on which to build our skillsets.
The range officers are friendly, approachable, helpful, and most importantly, safe. All instructions are communicated in an extremely clear manner, and proper protocols are always followed here without exception. Additionally, the range is well laid out and is maintained extremely well in an incredibly beautiful setting.
The office is also very well run. The staff is knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. It was especially nice to visit a range which has a seating area where patrons can relax with a cup of coffee while waiting for their party to arrive. In contrast with other ranges we've visited, this location felt like a country club.
I highly recommend Long Island Shooting Range of Brookhaven, and I especially recommend taking lessons with Gary. His love of shooting sports is readily apparent, as is his desire to share his passion with anyone who is interested in learning. We're looking forward to visiting again, and will certainly reach out to Gary when the time comes for us to obtain further...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFinally after years of trying to find a range to go to, having to deal with range officers being super short with me or rude this place is a god sent. I absolutely love these guys. Every single range officer there treats me and my wife like family. Even on the very first time i ever shot there they treated me unbelievably awesome. Oh and also when i went a month ago i brought my daughter with me she was able to shoot the 22 rifle and the range officer i forget his name but he was there today when i went and i feel bad not remembering his name, literally took 30 minutes out of his day to sit right next to her and show he the proper way to use a 22 rifle. I was dumb founded in how nice they are. No range has ever and i mean ever done that. Heās a pretty young guy and one of the best. Then thereās my guy Charlie who kept me and my wife and friends company helping us out the whole time. Charlie is one of the best humans Iāve met. I hope he sees this because i told him today i had to make a review for all he did for us. This range is extremely professional and safe. They are by the book they just donāt scream at you when u do something they treat you with respect. Anyway me and my wife shoot there atleast 2 times a month and Iām so happy Long Island has a range like this. The laws suck for us here gun owners but these guys make it a little better. Canāt wait to see you guys again this month. Also shouted you out on Instagram you guys deserve the best. š by the way thatās the one of the other range officers helping my wife on the 50cal heās...
