How would I describe this hike? Moderately tough. Hiked here on Friday after a 1.5 hour Metro North train ride from Grand Central (which I highly recommend sitting on the left side to enjoy the scenic view). Upon arriving at the station, was surprised there was a shuttle link that take you around Beacon for free, so we took this shuttle to the trail.
The hike starts off with man made metal stairs that you basically climb. Following the stairs, comes rocks and I mean inclined rocks! You have to be careful as it is easy for you to trip. Highly suggest wear hiking/ climbing shoes.
After about 45 minutes we made it to the overlook that over saw a beautiful scenic view. Also there is an abandoned rundown building that has some abandoned cable car machinery.
Hiking an additional hour (due to detour) you will find yourself at the fire tower, which you can easily climb (and its really windy so dress warmly). Highly not advised for those afraid of heights. The view there was also beautiful.
Due to the detour, the total of the hike was 4 hours and going down was pretty scary as its a rocky slope with a lot of loose rocks.
Note: there is one trail for hiking , but there are some forks on the road long the hike that...
Read moreWell worth the hike up from Beacon. A trail that is fairly moderate but definitely can be done from all ages and strengths if you take enough time.
The trail can get fairly crowded on nice days to the first summit, as in you will always have another group in you line of site. There is plenty of room though for everyone around and of course great views and sense of accomplishment when completing the whole adventure. Highly suggest for anyone wanting a bit of exercise!
First Mile or so of the hike is where most people will expect to get to and for sure worth the view, but highly suggest continuing the hike to South Mount Beacon tower and visiting the Fire Watch Tower that you can climb up and take pictures as necessary.
Slightly sad on how much broken glass and / or trash that can be found in the area though with people disrespecting the area. For the most part though it is...
Read moreGreat experience. My sixteen years old son and me together went to that great place today the Nov 5th 2022 at around 1:40pm. Beautiful fall sky with some white clouds. We seated on a rock and watching the Beacon city and over the Hudson River Newburgh city. Long time I had dream to visit this mountain. Later my dream came true.
I said my son- I love you more than I can say, and give him a kiss. I told him the great memory of Mount Gibraltar hike. Six years ago when he was 10, we visited southern Spain and we had very bitterly hike over the 95 degrees hot summer and arid weather. In terms of Gibraltar hike Beacon Mountain hike is nothing!
Love for the living world. No more war, no more human sufferings! No arms race, no...
