As I'm sure many other reviewers did, I purchased my puppy at Canine Corral -- the pet store literally next door to the Animal Center LI. The pet store has a deal with this hospital where they offer "free care" to all puppies purchased at the store. I made the horrible mistake of taking my puppy to this hospital from the store's recommendation. My experience was nothing short of a nightmare.
We brought home a 2 month old puppy. She was playful and lively, but we noticed minor respiratory issues. The pet store told us "this is normal for puppies that adjust to new homes" when they called to ask for an update on her rehoming. The next day we took her for a checkup at this animal hospital where within minutes we were told our puppy has pneumonia, kennel cough, and a parasite. The veterinarian Dr. Pat gave us two options: take her home with medication or hospitalize her with an IV. We opted for hospitalization so that she could recover quickly in a safe environment monitored by staff. We were told by Dr. Pat that she would be in their care for 1-3 days and that her condition was not that severe.
Our puppy was hospitalized for 5 long horrible days. The communication with the staff was horrendous. We called at least 3 times a day and were on hold for hours just to speak with vet technicians that did not even know what was happening with our puppy. We were told she was "happy" one day and "depressed" the next. There was no communication of what procedures or medications they were giving her, whether she needed oxygen for her pneumonia, the results of her x-rays, or if she was even eating. The vet techs did not relay ANY information of her worsening condition. We were not able to speak with ANY DOCTOR the entire time our puppy was hospitalized, constantly being told that "the doctor is not in today, call again next week." We should have been receiving daily updates of her condition from the DOCTORS themselves and yet, nothing the entire stay. It was agonizing not knowing the true condition of our puppy and I regret not intervening earlier.
On the fifth day, we forcibly removed our puppy from this animal center. We were told there was no doctor in that day but as soon as we requested her discharge, a "Dr. Smith" called us and yelled at us to keep her in their care. This "care" could only be summed up in one word: negligence. When we went to pick her up, she was a completely different puppy. Our once lively, energetic puppy looked like a living corpse. She couldn't breathe on her own, she couldn't stand, and she showed no interest in anything. Her shiny fur was matted down and she had no life in her eyes. It was so devastating to see her in that state. In five days, this animal center only made her condition worse and never notified us of her deteriorating state. If she had needed more urgent care, they should have notified us to take her to another hospital where she would have been appropriately accommodated 24/7. This hospital should have let us know they could not adequately care for our puppy as soon as her condition took a turn for the worse.
What's more is that once we requested her discharge, Canine Corral called us FIVE MINUTES LATER pushing us to keep our puppy at the Animal Center LI because "everything is free." It is simply unethical to contact my family and I about decisions regarding our puppy's health when you are the SELLER of the pet, and even more so since she was dying in their care.
Our puppy's health only worsened due to her stay at the Animal Center LI and we chose to humanely euthanize her at the new hospital to put her out of her suffering. We were sold a sick puppy and the Animal Center LI only made her sicker. There is no way to describe the trauma and what a horrible experience we went through with this animal center. If I could give 0 stars, I would.
Please do not bring your pets to the Animal Center LI if you truly care about them. Please do not purchase pets from Canine Corral if you do not want to go through the devastating heartbreak of losing...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHorrible staff. I got a rescue puppy from a Friends Of Freddy in Selden. They offered a free check up and first round of shots at this vet so I took her here even though it was a little far and I have a vet for my other dog. I called to make an appointment and wanted one quickly since she had a some bloat which is normal for a puppy who almost always have some kind of worms.
When seeing the vet he barely made eye contact and after glancing over the puppy for maybe 20 seconds he went on to trying to sell me all different things from pet insurance to dog food. He called my dog "he" even after the check up and she is a female. So I would bet he paid no attention during the check up. They did not give anything for the bloat and did not seem to care when I said she had a little red in her urine.
A few days later the red in her urine got a little worse so I called them back. They again did not seem to care and said if I wanted to take a urine sample they would look at it when they could. At this point I called my own vet who when I said she had a small bloat and red in urine told me to come in the next day. They gave her antibiotics for a UTI and a shot for basic puppy worms.
A few days on the antibiotics the urine was filled with blood and she had to go back to my vet. Turned out she had a bladder stone from the UTI and worms. With this knowledge I called back Animal Wellness Center. The puppy had a health guarantee from the shelter and costs were to be covered by Animal Wellness Center.
When I spoke to AWC they said they would not honor the guarantee and I would have to fit the bill. I called back the shelter and they were very upset with AWC and then called them. AWC called me back and told me it would be an expensive surgery and she would most likely have to be on special food and meds for the rest of her life. Followed up by telling me I should put the dog down. A vet telling people to put a 3 month old puppy down that after the surgery would have a great life just having to eat special food.
I hung up on AWC and spoke to my vet again. The surgery was just 800 which included an overnight stay, meds and her being fixed. She is now 6 months old perfectly healthy and after further tests crystal free to here she does not need meds or check ups every couple months. One urine test a year with her normal shots.
So AWC wanted to kill a perfectly healthy and great puppy. Don't bring your pet here. Island Rescue saved my puppy, the staff at both locations knows her by name cause everyone took an interested and was upset about such a young puppy having these...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAfter 4 years of grieving the loss of our dog, my family and I finally purchased a 2 month old angel from Canine Corral and expected for the days ahead to be filled with love and joy. Unfortunately, we lived through a 3 week nightmare. They sold us a sick dog, recommended us take her to the vet clinic they directly work with and are affiliated with. They told us puppies are supposed to diarrhea, cough, gag, and sneeze frequently due to rehoming stress. She only spent 5 days in our house, and when we took her to their recommended vet clinic The Animal Center LI, they notified us that she had kennel cough, pneumonia, and a parasite. She stayed in their care for 5 days and for those 5 days the vet clinic lied to us about her condition, failed to notify us about the severity of her pneumonia, failed to give her the oxygen and medicine she needed, and told us she was doing well. Keep in mind, we never ONCE got to speak to ANY doctor, only the vet techs who told us vague updates about her tail wagging, and her 'depression'. We ultimately decided to transfer her to an Animal Hospital nearby, and when we told the vet clinic that we wanted her discharged, they argued with us, yelled at us over the phone, and only agreed when we told them we are RELOCATING her to an ACTUAL hospital. Also, they decided to tell us that DAY that her situation got WORSE "overnight" and she's doing REALLY bad, after 5 days of "she's okay'' updates. Canine corral called us 5 minutes later trying to convince us to keep her in their care. Why would a pet store call us regarding our dog's health/vet business? When they brought her out to our car she looked like a corpse. She wasn't reactive, she couldn't stand, she couldn't breathe, and she was on her last dying breath. This was not the joyful, filled with life, healthy weight puppy I brought home originally. 5 days later while in the care of the new animal hospital, she passed away due to her deeply progressed pneumonia and neglect from THE ANIMAL CENTER LI. If it was possible, I would give The Animal Center LI 0 STARS. The pet store they work with sell sick dogs, refuse to take any accountability, lie and harass their customers, and offer a 5 year pet warranty with the vet clinic they work with. Their vet care is non existent and inhumane. All in all I would sum up my experience to be traumatizing, highly invasive, and borderline harassment. I'm not sure how they're still open or have any customers. SAVE YOURSELF A FUTURE HEARTBREAK AND DO NOT TAKE YOUR BELOVED PET TO...
