IC is composed of an amazing group of kids, many of whom have diverse interests. There's opportunities to learn new skills, from forestry to billiards to religion to music to dance. The town is made up of a smorgasbord of people who love conversation and will show you new parts of the world. There is no shortage of opportunity here and if you apply yourself and find what is right for you, there is a home at IC for you.
While I enjoyed my time at IC, I can admit it was a challenge for me to find my footing here. Ithaca College is a great place for upper-middle white class folks in athletics. It's also great for the sociable types. But for true academics it can often fall short of being challenging or engaging. The teachers are fantastic, but the coursework is bland. There are a lot of preppy people, very fake people, but mostly just a population of people still trying to find themselves, which is normal. It can often be hard to find the right friends. But the community is huge, and you will find them if you try.
The politics at IC (not the coursework but the administration) is rocky at best and getting rockier. IC needs to figure out their priorities and give the students (who put themselves into massive debt to attend this college) a good governing body who take pay cuts to give scholarships and better food and healthcare options.
Also, on politics: Not only is the Ithacan so far left they nearly circle around back to right, but the entire political atmosphere is made up of so many people with so little real-world applicaple knowledge that it definitely put a weird taste in my mouth. White feminism is rampant.
Otherwise it's a great school for communications, music, environmental studies, outdoor education, and business. If you want a liberal arts degree I would recommend another school. Utilize office hours. The teachers are amazing and filled with knowledge. Talk in class. Have discussions. Go off campus. Jump into a gorge. Stay for a...
Read moreAt its best Ithaca College is serviceable and at worst Ithaca College needs to seriously rethink its strategy to attract prospective students.
The dorms are outdated and often lack any ventilation in the rooms leading to the room to either being freezing cold or sweltering hot. The heaters in the rooms randomly decide when they want to work and electrical outlets are in places no one can normally reach. The bathrooms also need work as do the students that use them.
The dining halls lack real variety and are mostly closed on weekends meaning good luck finding food like all the other 4,900 odd students. Even with recent changes, it feels like a bandaid to the problem rather than a step towards a solution.
The instruction and instructors can be a hit and miss with some who are too good at their job and others make you wonder why they even got the job. Some courses have no reason being optional while others will make you question whether a gap year looks cool. If you are doing business, film, journalism, photography, theater, or performance arts. this is your school. If you are doing anything else, it can be a hit and miss.
The rising cost of Ithaca College ( as with most institutions right now) makes community college and state universities look more and more favorable. If there is no quality of life improvements, there is no need to have a net cost slowly creeping up on Cornell’s net cost.
The school is plagued by a history of questionable choices, over-expansion, and poor management. I can only hope the best for those who have to work here and don’t...
Read moreEducation wise I feel that my student made good choices when possible when talking to instructors and fellow students who had advise on which instructors are worthwhile. Cost: as others have written, the cost keeps increasing and now is getting to be at the same level of a University. Meal Plans: "Spendy" with questionable value. As time and experience moved on, we moved to more basic option, when it offered a quick solution without having to travel off campus. Housing is dated, and in some cases not well ventilated. FEES: This place is like a HOA which will fee you to death. Besides having to pay for parking, even if you help peers move and leave the car for 5 mins, a ticket, from what I have heard from others the campus police seem to focus more on ticketing then anything else. 6: FEES: Part 2.0. Late fees, even a min late to a day late, there is ZERO flexibility, now they will not even consider a post mark. Funny the IRS will even give you that bit. 7.Finance office is useless: On many occasions myself, student, or former wife will call or email, and seldom get any response. Overall my student is happy with most things, but keep in mind my and other reviews when considering this choice. Spend your...
