I have been up here a couple of times over the past 30 years. I have often driven up, but did the hike about ten years ago too.
I moved out of the state of New York a few years ago, so I like to visit Lake George when I am home visiting Albany. I convinced my friend to drive up to the top of Prospect Mountain with me on my most recent trip.
We pulled up to the gate, the older gentleman selling tickets told us we couldn't use a credit card. Luckily, I had cash and it's only $10 a car load, not bad as I had just been to a mountain in NC that was $20 PER PERSON.
The other plus of Prospect Mountain is it's convenient proximity to Lake George Village, no 45 minute drives to rural areas necessary.
As we drove up the mountain there were numerous scenic overlooks with adjacent parking lots. I love to take photos, so I was in heaven. It's neat to see the Northway and Lake George Village from way up high.
It was a slightly overcast day when we went but the views were still great. There were a few picnic areas too, so this is a great spot to bring lunch.
The only bummer was when we got to the highest parking lot, there wasn't a tram running to the top on the day we went. We walked up via a steep, but paved path, it took about 10 minutes max. Even if you didn't do this, the views were still great from the parking lot and overlooks.
I'm really glad I took the time to visit, it was a fun day! This is a great activity for those with mobility impairments that still want to experience views from high up on the mountain. Bring the...
Read moreOn a previous trip we hiked up the mountain, parking at the base in town and using a trail that goes almost straight up. The hike was in late fall, so it was windy and cold at top but the view was worth the effort. This is not a casual hike, so wear proper hiking gear. This time we visited in late Sept so weather was still warm and sunny, and we drove up. It's $10 per car load on a well maintained highway that takes you all the way up to a large parking lot near the summit, passing several sightseeing spots. I recommend visiting the summit first and stopping at the scenic overlooks on the way down. There is a free shuttle to take you the last quarter mile to the top, or you can simply walk. The summit has a couple picnic tables and rock outcroppings for sitting. The it's another few steps to the highest placed boulder for a photo opp. Bring your good camera, and/or a pair of binoculars for surveying the second to none, breathtaking views. On a clear day you can see all the way to Albany! Its a relatively quick and very convenient trip, and a great time all around. Perfect spot to bring guests from out of town for a bird's eye view of...
Read moreI was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the Fall foliage was, and how simple it was to go to the "top" of Prospect Mt. The road to get to the main summit parking is well maintained: paved, wide with good signage re curves, and a few senic lookout locations. The summit parking area has bathrooms and picnic benches.
The hiking path to the summit is very steep, with a set of stairs at the end, so go at your own pace. The park rangers were managing car traffic up the road from the parking area to the summit, so anyone not able to hike could drive.
The summit has a nice picnic area, some exhibitions on the history of the Mountain, and a decent bathroom area. Plenty of space to stay and admire the view with family and friends.
I spent two hours exploring as i didn't plan on picnicking. Highly recommend if you are...
