This business model has omitted a very crucial variable- customer service in regards to loyalty in courtesy and respect to its customers. This business appears to be very flakey and inconsistent with their business hours of operation especially in a very competitive industry when potential customers can easily purchase at Hick's, Heritage Farm & Garden, and not to mention (even) Lowes. My family has been coming to this location for years and the business has been taken over apparently by descendants of the previous owners who have always been respectful and helpful during our shopping experiences. I have recommended this location to neighbors and other relatives prior and during change of ownership. I do in fact like the plant selection here and find them to be more reasonably priced. However, the past three times I have traveled from the city out to this establishment, they have been closed, closed due to a "private event" not occurring at the location via a hand written sign on a paper on the gate, and "closing" as workers waved their arms in an "x" manner 10 minutes prior to the closing time although 1MORE HOUR WAS POSTED ON THE INTERNET, (most humans simply search the business name and when the official page with a photo and description pops up and its hours of operation and respective days are clearly posted, this is sufficient. No one has the additional time to click into the website link TO VERIFY BUSINESS HOURS when it is up to the business owner to keep their business times accurate to avoid frustrated customers. We clearly expressed our frustration upon entering as we were waved down prior to even getting out of our car (assuming we had 1more hour until closing as the internet stated), and voicing that we came a long way from the city to give them business rather than Hicks but that there always seem to be a mishap when we try to shop here. Yes, we had an attitude because we drove over an hour to shop here and still had 1 hour to shop(according to their posting on the internet), but we weren't exactly wrongfully or overly rude and tried to quickly choose just 4 plants. We were just about to finalize our choice and check out ( 3 minutes to closing) as "Brian" or one of the older associates firmly tells us they are closed and it's posted on the door although I tried reminding him how we've had bad luck trying to find the store open and indeed, the internet says they were open yet another hour. He said "it is posted on the door" and I once again explained that's not what their online hours of operation reveal TO THE WORLD(not just those who have the leisure of driving 5 minutes to see a hand written paper posted on the door). He was VERY RUDE and even MORE OBNOXIOUS as I calmly encouraged him to possibly extend a courtesy of 10 minutes in a special case since they are responsible for innacurate posting of business hours. He pretty much said "WE DON'T GET PAID EXTRA TO DO THAT". I and my mother have worked in a customer service related business and we would NEVER tell that to a customer. Disgusting. You just lost several Brooklyn clients, as we have recommended this place to neighbors who outfit their million dollar brownstone gardens, often featured in movies,tv series, real estate magazines and decor magazines and websites. Your nice selection does not supercecde your disrespect to clientele. This is about the 3rd time I was unable to shop here and in result have spent a few hundred at Hicks although I would have preferred to spend it at this place. Hicks, however, is a better stocked, more professional, and well known & respected nursery but I did prefer the quaintness of this place. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS place unless you enjoy being disappointed and...
Read moreI visited this nursery today and was truly impressed. From the moment you approach, it’s easy to find thanks to a large, clear sign on the main road with their phone number - perfect if you want to call ahead and check on product availability. The nursery itself is spacious, exceptionally clean, and well-maintained. Everything is clearly labeled—whether you’re looking for annuals, perennials, hostas, vegetables, herbs, or indoor plants, the signs make it so easy to navigate. Prices are clearly marked, and even if a specific pot is missing a tag, you can find pricing information on the stand itself. Beyond plants, they offer a great selection of garden decor, including wind chimes, macrame hangers, seeds, tools, and more. I was especially touched to see memorial garden statues for pets - one in particular, a cat with wings, really moved me. The staff is fantastic - friendly, sociable, and knowledgeable. They answered all my questions about plant care and repotting. I came looking for an anthurium of a specific color, and thanks to a Google recommendation, I checked here and found exactly what I needed! I also noticed a staff member regularly walking through the rows and removing plants that didn’t look their best. That attention to detail speaks volumes about the quality and care they put into their plants. The entire nursery looked vibrant and healthy. Prices are affordable, hours are convenient, and the parking is excellent, including designated spaces for people with disabilities right by the entrance. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, I highly recommend this place. It’s a welcoming, beautiful place with a wide variety of high-quality plants and exceptional service. A real gem for any...
Read moreI shop at many nurseries in the area, but had never shopped at Zaino's until this year (2017). I had passed it a number of times on my way to Hick's, but never stopped. This year, I decided to try it, and I am very happy that I did, because I not only found varieties of plants there that other nurseries didn't have, but the prices were also several dollars less that I was finding elsewhere, which I appreciated. Quality of the plants is very high and many are from the same wholesale nurseries as stocked by the the larger nurseries. I bought beautiful coral bells, peonies, tomato plants, phlox and roses there.
I would give them 5 stars except for the outdoor staff, who aren't engaging. Since I generally knew what I wanted when I visited, I didn't need help from them, but at most of the nurseries I go to, when you show interest in a plant or put it in your basket, someone is right there to ask you about where you intend to plant it, what kind of light you have, soil conditions, etc., giving you an opportunity to chat about your plans. In four visits this season to Zaino's, I have found this consistently to not be the case and I noted other people having an issue with it, too, so be prepared to go looking for staff to help you, because they don't go out of their way to do so. Indoor staff seemed friendly enough.
Another reason for 4 stars, not 5 - they don't seem to run (or at least advertise) sales and no one there has asked me about joining a frequent buyers club, which I belong to from the four other nurseries I frequent.
All in all, though, a good nursery with excellent stock...
