It's a great place to take a leisurely walk. The mine is a short way off from the parking lot. It's maybe 5 to 10 minutes on relatively even terrain. There are trails leading away from it as well. They are a tiny bit tougher but overall accessable to people.
The mine is easy to find with a well defined path and signs. The entrance is carved smooth and has hand rails. Despite all the water, the floor seemed largely dry and easy to access. There were some wet slippery spots, especially if you don't have safe footwear. Please don't wear flip flops! The cave is largely lit by natural light. Even in late afternoon you could see fairly well. I can't image going there in the dusk and enjoying it though. You can walk freely in three accessable portions, though much of the cave is flooded and so is inaccessible.
The rest of the property has areas that have industrial remains and gorgeous natural features. You can see partially accessable and graffitied ruins of the cement making process which makes for interesting viewing. You can also walk along gorgeous babbling streams and see huge old growth trees. There are lots of great photo opportunities!
Lastly, there is a museum on the grounds. Sadly I couldn't see it that day, but please leave a donation so they can keep maintaining...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe Widow Jane Mine is a fascinating place to explore. The mine is a large drift mine consisting of passageways and rooms that were left behind by dolostone miners many years ago. Most of the passages are underwater today, but the parts you can see are interesting. Accessing the mine is easy. Just park in the parking lot by the Century House Museum. From the parking lot follow the signs to the mine. The path is a loose stone dust path and is fairly flat. At the end of it you will see the mine. Once you get into the mine it is easy and safe to walk around in. Most of the mine is filled with water but the rooms you do see are large and you can get a feel for what it is like to work in a mine. Be sure to walk around the outsides of the mine as there are interesting sites to see. If you go up the hill, you will find 8 tombstones, for the miners who died in the mine. Occasionally concerts are held at the mine and you should check the website ahead of time before going to make sure it is not being used. Sometimes, you will see folding chairs in the mine from the concerts. On Sundays the Century House Museum is open and this place is worth a look. This is definitely a cool...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy boyfriend and I went to check out the mine a little before 6pm, aware that the website hours stated open for self-guided walking from sunrise to sundown. We parked and walked to the trail to the mine and barely looked around as it was really creepy, kind of cold and we got spooked. Not even 10 minutes after arriving the gate at the bottom of the hill to the road was locked so we were stuck................. thank G0d we were able to drive out using an alternate driveway on someone's property but never again would not recommend. Creepy af and felt like I was in a horror movie. There were 2 cars there presumably maintenance/ workers and we didn't see anyone coming in so who locked us in..?????? a mess....
