My wife and I had a not so good experience here.
On their website, under "How to Choose a Dog" (which we only discovered later on), they say the following: "MEET WITH THE SULLIVAN SPCA STAFF - The Sullivan SPCA staff can help match you with the right dog. They have valuable information to share that can determine which dogs will be most compatible with you and your household. We welcome a shelter visit to discuss the adoption process prior to choosing a dog. We want your adoption to be a success and provide you with a wonderful companion for years to come!"
Nevertheless, on our first visit there, they allowed us - even encouraged us - to take a dog home after being there for just a few minutes, with virtually no discussion or assessment of whether it was suitable for us and our situation. They also gave us no guidance as to how to transition it into our home, where we already had one dog. Our dog is a female German Shepherd mix, and the new dog was a female Australian Shepherd mix. The two dogs did not get along well pretty much from the start, and within a couple of days we felt it was a serious problem. It was an extremely stressful two days, both for us, and the dogs.
When we called to let them know what was going on, the director (Debbie?), who had not been there the day we came, said it was no problem to bring the dog back. She also said that generally speaking, it's not recommended to bring a female dog in when there's already a female there, and especially when both dogs are herding dogs. Needless to say, we were annoyed that the person on staff when we picked the dog up had not advised us of this. We were further annoyed and disappointed later on, after doing some reading, to learn that there were steps we could have taken while transitioning the new dog in that might have mitigated the conflict that occurred and possibly resulted in us keeping it. This struck us as basic information that a professional shelter would provide as a matter of course.
When I brought the dog back, the director refunded the adoption fee without any issue, but was very laid back and seemed not to care very much about how things had not worked out - that the dog had been put through much unnecessary and avoidable stress, or that I had had to drive almost two hours round trip to return the dog. She didn't apologize or explicitly take responsibility for what was clearly a screw-up on their part, and barely said goodbye when I was leaving. All in all, the experience left me with a bad taste.
I think the people here mean well, and it's possible that our experience was not representative. The fact remains, however, that the way our adoption was handled was totally at odds with their stated policy. For anyone considering adopting a dog from here, I strongly recommend that you ask as many questions as you can, and to make sure they make an effort to ensure that the dog is a good fit for you, and give you advice for bringing it into your home. In addition, as a general rule, don't adopt a dog primarily because you think it's cute. We will never make that...
Read moreThis place gets absolutely no stars from me but unfortunately i have to put atleast one star to post it. They are scamming people into paying there adoption fee without being able to adopt the dog. The dog we were supposed to be adopting was given to us sick, after less than 48 hours of having him he was taken to the vet i believe with parvo, where they tried to charge me $150 (their vet by the way) then when I questioned paying it they told me they are not giving the dog back to me and that itbwas best he stayed at the shelter, they were keeping my $475 adoption fee and not offering me another dog which I wouldn't have taken anyway. I was absolutely not takjng that for an answer so when i stood my ground the manager Christina called and after argueing my point she agreed to give me a full refund because i was "harrassing" her. The lady Nancy that works there is not a good person. She doesnt want these puppies to have forever homes or they wont be able to keep collecting adoption fees and scamming people. The girl Caitlin that works in there is incompetent and never has any answers to your questions. The vet they use lied and said i was saying things that was completely untrue. The women in there are not very nice or respectful. Mind you my husband volunteered to redo there whole computer system which Nancy had no problem asking for. They aren't worried about getting those poor dogs a home. They just want your adoption fees even though you don't adopt a dog. What a joke this place is. DONT FUND THEM AND DO NOT GET A DOG FROM THEM! They have broken my childrens heart and...
Read moreSo upset with my current interaction with the shelter. I have now three pets adopted two from a different county spca and one from this one. I have never felt so angry with the process and people as I have with the Sullivan county SPCA. I had to bring my puppy back once she was old enough to get spayed, i took the drive over an hr away to drop her off with the hopes that they will take care of her the whole time she was there. I get a call telling me that she was not able to get spayed because she was upset and had an accident. Okay totally understandable she probably thought we were giving her back and was distraught. God only knows what she went through her and her siblings coming into the shelter at such a young age. The part that makes me upset is that she was to sleep overnight at the vet (they wanted to watch her and make sure she was not dehydrated...ok understandable) But the fact that my 6 month old puppy had poop all over her hip down her back side that she must of slept in her own feces overnight until we picked her up at 1130am! So the vet that they trust as well as the spca didn't care to clean her. As well as when I asked about her harness and coat that she has when dropped off she snapped at me and was rude the whole time. I got no paperwork telling me what the vet did to my puppy even though I was told that they did blood work and testing to make sure she was ok. The other spca gave me so much more information about my animals then this one as well. I feel like they just want you in and out as soon...
