I have been coming to these cottages for the last 3 years (my Mom, close to 20 years) or visiting my Mom at the cottages before my stays. This year (2018) my Mom, my daughter and 4 grandchildren came to the cottages for a week stay. The cost $1400.00 plus tax. Upon arriving, I notice the inside of the cottage was not as clean as our cottage we stayed in previous. Cobwebs in the corners near the floor in both bedrooms and 1 bathroom. I knew there had been a family there the day before. We settled in for the night. The next day the kids went swimming, played games, etc. We cooked out that evening, as we were finishing dinner, the owner (husband) came and yelled at us about grilling on the patio and we needed to scrub any spots the grill left. After we got the the kids in bed, my daughter and I walked down to the beach, my Mom was inside the cottage reading. My daughter left her cell phone on our cooler by the front door. We returned from the beach and her phone was gone. We looked for her phone and could not find it. We got up early the next day to look through everything, under the cottages, as we could hear it ring, but could not find it. We decided to look in the bedroom where the ring was coming from. As we lifted the mattress to look under it we found Bedbugs! Ugh!!! As we continued to look we found Bedbugs in my Mom’s bed at the other end of the cottage. We called the owners and she came over, we told her about the Bedbugs and cell phone. She went into the bedroom with my daughter, she came out with the bedbugs in her hand! My daughter came out and said the owner grabbed a tissue out of the toilet (my daughter had used the tissue to grab a Bedbug to take picture) and rolled it up in her hand. My Mom and I were in the kitchen area when we said we needed to check the bunk beds the kids were sleeping in. The owner left, we checked the beds and all had bedbugs, plus around the back side of the top bunks along the edge there was used contacts, ponytails with hair still attached and enough dust I could write my name. My Mom was in tears, I was extremely upset. This was my Mom’s favorite place, her friend. I had never expected this from the owners. The owner returned, we told her we would not stay in the cottage. She kept saying you just need to go home. We wanted our money back, which she offered a check in the mail, we sad NO. She left again and returned with most of our money, she singled me out, handed me the money and said “I would appreciate it, if you would not say anything to my other patrons or I will have to check all the cottages and I do not want to do that” the told us we were the first to complain about bugs and said she could do nothing about the missing phone. We packed up and left. Two days later my daughter called to see if the owners had found anything out about her phone. The husband was rude and said his fat a** had to clean the cottage and that we brought the bedbugs in. Sorry this so long, but this was a horrible experience, a friend lost, kids upset and the bizarre behavior of the owners. No one picks up bedbugs and puts them in their bare hand without a thought or makes assumptions. When you own a business with people coming in and out, why wouldn’t you check the mattresses, and clean? For $1400.00 I would expect a clean cottage, clean mattresses and especially since she had known my Mom...
Read moreWe just returned from our first visit to Cottages at the Water's Edge and really enjoyed it. We had initially booked #8, a small two-bedroom cottage, but once we had a look at the larger ones, decided to move to #10 as it has a huge screened porch with a dining table and lounge furniture. Since we were there a week we wanted more room to spread out and also wanted an indoor dining area. ||||The cottages were extremely clean. There is a large grassy area where our kids played with other guests, lots of great places to sit and admire the view, lovely old trees so there's always some shade, and the beach is shallow quite a long way out, so it's perfect for children. The view and the breeze were spectacular. ||||The owners are going for a retro feel, with the lounge furniture, cottage decor, and lack of TVs, which we appreciated. It was easy to relax. ||||We used the grill and the basic kitchen facilities for some meals, but visited Vermilion's French restaurant/bar Touche, the soda shop, and the Woodstock Cafe - we recommend them all. We also went into Huron to the Main Street Tavern which had excellent burgers and craft beer. ||||Had a day at Cedar Point and another day on South Bass Island - the cottage was a great home base...
Read moreWe recently stayed at the Garden Cottage, the bedroom with an adjoining bathroom is the nicest of all. The bathroom needs updating, would be nice to have more space to hang towels, clothing etc. we prefer an area to hang items vs placing inside a dresser. The shower is adequate, however there was no hot water, it was barely lukewarm, for some reason the sink did have hot water.||The other two bedrooms were not as pleasant, very dark walls, need to be lightened, to give it that cottage appeal. ||Bedding was provided, however we had to bring our own towels, bath, beach, and kitchen.||There are ceiling fans throughout with a window a/c in the living room area.||Grills available for cooking, plenty of sitting areas situated by the cottages as well as down by Lake Erie waters. The grounds are kept clean, and your close enough to Marblehead, Cedar Point and other attractions. Good views of the lake, beautiful sunsets. ||Personally, I feel this place is a bit overpriced, considering the age of the cottages and condition: unsure if they have off season rates and it does appear as though they are making some...
