Updating my review. I purchased two albums I already had in March, and I specifically asked if I could exchange them if I already had them, and told no problem. Had to take a business trip for work and figured I'd exchange them when I got back. Well I got back a day before we entered lockdown for three months. Figured I'd wait until they reopened to exchange them, but they decided not to. So I emailed to ask for an exchange and was told the best they could do was buy them back at a reduced rate because 30 days passed. Well what should I have done during the lockdown and subsequent store closure? The albums are sealed with the price tags on them and are perfectly fine. I understand this is a tough time, and I hated to make the ask to begin with, but after buying $1k+ in vinyl and never returning or exchanging anything, the curt response and non-solution rubs me the wrong way. Now I'll have to throw them up on eBay or just gift them at eat $50. It's not like I was asking for a refund just to exchange and they would have two perfectly saleable albums in exchange. Because of this, I've discovered three other record stores, that in the future will get my purchases instead. Wishing Redscroll the best of luck in the future. You guys used to be my favorite. I discovered the joys of 180g vinyl buying several from you, but time to move on I guess. Too bad.
Original Review Apparently my first review didn't make it through. Strange..
Anyway, this is an amazing record store! From new 180g+ to used and everything in between. Great Indie/Metal selection. However, I've spent over an hour in here in the past and still haven't had a chance to check out the Soul/Funk, Jazz etc. I'm sure it's just as amazing as the rest of the store. I've found some pretty obscure stuff in the front room. Need to check out the back room someday. I always manage to come in an hour and a half before closing. Not enough time. Could spend four hours plus.
The owners are super friendly and accommodating. I was given a tour my first time in. The records are all clearly priced unlike some of the competition where it's a surprise when you check out. Unlike some record stores it doesn't have that dusty, dirty, mildew smell that you get with some other stores.
And to top it off they were playing Camel when I was in last. Ahh...
Such gem of a record store. Highly recommend it! Especially if you're a...
Read moreThere aren't a whole lot of record stores in Connecticuit, and the few that exist are generally 1 of 2 things.
1 - A record store that's picked over, where the condition of the covers or the records are marginal at best, the prices are ridiculously high given the condition, the selection is effectively things you would expect to find at a Goodwill or garage sale, and ran by a person who has little regard for posted hours.
2 - A record store that sells generally new records, more CD's than anything, fairly over priced, and never has anything you're looking for.
Then there's Red Scroll. These guys have an ever changing selection and a great mix of new records and used. Their turnover and organisation is incredible given it's size, and their attention to curation is incredible. They seem to specialize in independent artists, but, you're going to find the most popular releases from artists you thought you were the only one into.
I probably see 2 record stores a week, and I make sure to hit Red Scroll whenever I'm in Connecticut. It's one of the only record stores in the world that I can never walk out of without finding at least 1 record I've been looking for. Their selection is vast and their prices on new and used records is amazing given the area. When I say vast, I've never seen a larger Mondo/Deathwaltz, import vinyl, independent artist collection on the east coast. They rival anything you'll find in an Armageddon shop.
If you're truly into vinyl, you're doing yourself a huge disservice by not stopping here. You'll definitely find something you've been looking for. Also, Pro Tip: It may be overwhelming, but go in the backroom to see their used selection. You will find a ton of reasonably priced albums to fill in your collection in amazing condition! Check out their Discogs, maybe they have 2/3 of their selection listed. Stop in to see the...
Read moreEdit, after owner apology I have been down there a few times and also bought from them online. Thank you!
My wife and I used to go down there 3 or 4 times a year. Great selection of music and to begin with, friendly staff. Each time we'd spend well over $100 there. Last time we were there we brought our three children with us, one of which is on the autism spectrum. The one on the spectrum was having a tough day and was all over the place with his movements. We were having a hard time reigning him in and after an employee on the register yelled at him we decided it was time to leave. My wife took him outside while I paid for what we were buying, which was upwards to $200. I was not greeted with as much as a hi nor did I receive a thank you. I guess the message was clear that my business was not welcome anymore. I haven't been since and removed the Redscroll sticker off my car. It's too bad as the stores selection is really good. But if you have children with issues I suppose it's best to leave them home or simply stay away.
