This is a speakeasy afternoon tea spot! The entrance is through The Burgary. Janam Tea is upstairs (no elevator). The inside was really pretty, with a good amount of natural light coming in from large windows. The decor of this place was pretty much antique-looking, perfect with the speakeasy theme. And when it comes to “old” things, their furniture seemed to be old too… Hopefully they will eventually buy new furniture with antique style in a near future...
It was a hot and humid day, so the owner Amy asked if we wanted chilled white wine. She brought us nice glasses full of their House Wine. The cold wine went down real smooth… As for menu, they only offer Afternoon Tea here, and you must make a reservation beforehand.
First, we had to choose our tea. Amy first asked what kind of teas we usually like, and then proceeded with her recommendations. WE got Darjeeling Black Tea and Assam Tea. They were both interesting, high quality and tasty.
While we were enjoying the tea, she had to go downstairs to where the kitchen is, in order to get create the food part of our afternoon tea. She explained beforehand that it will take a little bit of time before she can bring out the food, and politely asked for our patience and thanked us for waiting.
The food was pretty darn good, the egg salad sandwich came out too salty but other than that, it was quite delightful. From finger sandwiches to scone with homemade clotted cream and jam, and then the desserts...we enjoyed them all!
When we were done, we were instructed to exit through a purple door right by the fireplace. This was really interesting to me, you don’t see entrance and exit being separated like this. I think it makes it even more “speakeasy” which was fun! And also, this gets you right out to the street, instead of going back through the burger joint.
We had a super relaxing afternoon tea time here, and Amy took a good care of us even though she was busy. She came by a couple of times to see if we needed refill in our pot without us asking for it. Great service! One thing to note is that they have a strict cell phone policy. They want you to take a “digital detox” so that you can truly appreciate the experience, and connect with your company. I think that is great! You can take photos with your cell phone, but no talking, texting, etc. So if you are looking for an interesting afternoon tea with Indian tea, try...
Read moreI found this tea place a year ago, but just got a chance to come last week. It is such a must go spot! All the food are homemade, and the tea are so special. I came with my friend, but of course you are not able to be seated until all people on your reservation arrived. I suggest you can come before 3 pm, cause they close at 5, and it is a good place to spend time and chat with group of people. This is not a fancy and luxury high tea place as other high tea in 5th Ave. but it has its own style. It makes you feel you are not in NYC, but some romantic European restaurant. This tea place need your reservation before you come. And it is located at second floor. Come and try, you...
Read moreWhat a precious discovery! Hidden behind a burger joint and sharing space with a speakeasy (but working different hours), the lady who runs this tea house has been sharing her devotion for tea with New York city for the last three years and a half. She exclusively presents small-batch teas from single plantations in India, of which she can tell many stories, and she serves them as part of an all home made delicious high tea service. The ambiance is gorgeous, and the service just perfect for this type of event.
This kind of dedication for the craft requires a lot of effort. I was so grateful that I could take part of it, and I'm looking forward to sharing it with more...
