When we visit relatives in this lovely community, we also attend Mass at St. Joe’s. It’s a beautiful medium sized church with very interesting architecture from years past. The Mass of course is very inspirational and the church family very warm to visitors.
If you’re a non-Catholic, there is something there for you as well. Probably the most beautiful statue I have ever seen in my life is nestled next to the church next to the side entrance. It is a creation of the Virgin Mary holding her baby son Jesus while sitting under an awe inspiring stone grotto. We saw it during an evening mass during Christmas season and it brings tears to your eyes. But that is not the best part even - it is an adaptation of Michelangelo's Piata that sits in the entrance of St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome (where a grieving Mother Mary is holding Jesus after he was removed from the cross).
It is said that Michelangelo's Piata was the artist’s favorite statue that he every made and he would stand in front of it for hours at a time since Mary reminded him of his Mother.
