Continuous Activity & Geyserite Build-up These geysers are often “very active,” emitting steam and water almost continuously, with occasional powerful eruptions that may reach ~40 feet high . Over time, silica-rich water deposits geyserite—or sinter—around the vent, gradually forming a cone or mound typical of cone-type geysers . Distinctive “Pre-Eruption” Sound The National Park Service notes that between eruptions, the geyser emits a unique, growling steam-and-water sound, as if it’s alive—an auditory signal that pressure is building .

This is easily a 5 star no doubt. Cistern is directly connected to the one and only Steamboat Geyser, and the water level helps to dictate whether or not an eruption is possible in the big one. On top of being connected to the biggest geyser on planet earth, Cistern is easily one of the most aestheticly pleasing springs in the entirety of the park. Absolutely beautiful wether it's full to the brim or bone dry.

Great place to spend half a day exploring. Be aware, the only toilets are above the trail in the parking area so you may want to plan a figure 8 loop or risk backtracking. There is so much to see! Tons of variety and interesting features. Great walk that is most easy with a few moderate uphill grades that required some breaks for cathing breath for sedentary middle agers like me.
