Jay Peak (3,862 ft) is a mountain in the northern Green Mountains of Vermont, about 5 miles south of the Canada–US border. Most of the mountain is in Jay State Forest and the town of Jay, Vermont.
It is named for the town of Jay which, in turn, is named for the First Chief Justice of the United States and local landholder, John Jay.
The mountain is flanked to the southwest by Big Jay (3,786 ft) and to the north by North Jay Peak (3,438 ft).
Jay Peak is crossed by the Long Trail, a 272-mile hiking trail running the length of Vermont.

Read moreVisited off-season, but you can still hike to the top. There's a gravel driveway that goes all the way to the top. Regular cars not allowed, but you can hike it. Hike is very steep in places, but the views are great. It's cool to see the forest transition to alpine Krummholz as you reach the top. The strange ski lift building at the top is cool yet imposing and creepy. Great hike for people who want to get away; took about 90 minutes each way and spent 30 at the top, and never saw 1 other person...
