I travel often and most recently I was in Wilmington, Vt and passed by a "Jersey Cow" farm and was inclined to stop and show my 1.5 year old son the cows. Upon my surprise, as we exited our vehicle the farmer John was driving at the cows with his tractor and yelling aggressively at the cows. This made for a very uneasy experience for me and my son.
I then preceded to explain why that was wrong to my 1.5 year old son. We went and saw the tractor that was parked and I explained some other things that we saw. After interacting with the cows I noticed several things that made me feel quite uneasy.
Some of these cows have bulging eyes, which upon further research exhibits high anxiety and stress.
There was no shade for them and after talking to a worker there named Ben, I discovered they stay in the field all day after getting milked at 4am. Not to return to the "barn" until approx. 3p to get milked again and then locked in.
I noticed each day as I passed or stopped the cows were clearly asking for shelter.
No access to water
Just yesterday I felt a need to return to the farm while my son was napping. I parked close to where they drink water and stayed here for at least 30 minutes it was close to 85°
There were 2 cows that entire time at the water trough making it impossible for the other cows to drink. Everytime one would get close one of 2 said cows wouldn't let them pass.
I tried my best to communicate this but was aggressively met by a woman who I have video of, in addition I have almost of this documented and recorded.
These cows are clearly malnourished.
We decided to go public with this information due to the response we received from this woman, as she wasn't willing to hear the message I was simply trying to relay.
Upon further investigation, I saw they were a producer of CABOT cheese. Which is why I'm writing this review. I'm worried that this may be happening at several farms and would like to join hands to correct this type of situation with proper support for...
Read moreWhen I was kid, my family would drive to Mount Snow every weekend, and we'd always stop by this farm to stock up on their delicious maple syrup. It was a family tradition to stop along the way of our 3 hour trip from Westchester, NY to West Dover, Vermont and it is a fond memory that will be with me forever. The maple syrup is second to none and the family that runs this farm is always friendly and always available to all visitors who drive through! Their light-amber maple syrup is...
Read moreThe Wheeler Family Farm, is a family operated farm located in So. Vermont on a picture perfect setting. Their herd of Jersey "girls" cows are some of the healthiest happiest cow herds I have seen. I look forward to seeing them turned out to spring pasture every year. You can stop by the farm stand for some delicious hand made Vermont maple syrup or perhaps some fresh produce. It was always a pleasure to bump into Mr Wheeler at the mail box and be able to say, good morning! How are the...
