There are so many things that should be said about this place, and a good majority of them aren’t any good. Very nice facility, but it’s extremely obvious that this is a for profit business and nothing less!
Review after review regarding over priced entry, food, and disrespectful staff. When you take a few minutes to read the owner’s responses, it’s extremely clear that they are defensive and refuse to listen to feedback. Almost every single response is chock full of passive aggressive comments to put the blame back of the parents or coaches. We fully understand that it’s your business and you have the right to run it how you want, and I for one am pretty confident that every single person who enters the building knows that they do not have to enter...pointing these things out to customers paying to support their kids is absolutely pointless by the ownership. Just proves the reviewers point. Youth sports is a multi billion dollar industry in the country, and places like this only fuel the expenses!
Entry fees at high school and middle school games and events all go to cover the school district costs and specifically support our kids, but this seems to be used as justification for double charging parents and grandparents who have already paid for the kids to play here in the first place. This again has been brought up time and time again, but the owners continues to respond with the same argument that they are the cheapest (now $6/ person) which is absolutely not true since our family and friends have been to multiple games and facilities that have zero entry fees. It’s a very similar tactic to airlines charging for coach passengers for luggage or “preferred seating.”
Then there is the absolute ridiculous issue of not paying score keepers and “asking” for volunteers to do it without any training or explanation at all. Instruction sheets do very little for volunteers that are forced to sit at the table with a minute or less before game time. These coaches and kids put in hours and hours of practice and preparation to play these games, and the job of the score keepers is critical to fair play. In a previous argumentative response by the owner to this issue simply states that they don’t want to pay someone minimum wage to do it, and having ADULT parents work for the facility instead fixed the problem. I personally have been forced to do this job without any explanation of their systems, and watched parents be told that games will not start until someone “steps up!”
Come support your kids, be told to pay entry fee, and then work for free or the games won’t be played...crazy! I’ve even had the pleasure of working this table next to a few teenagers (not adults) who are yelling at players and adding to the ridiculousness of the so called voluntary role. To this point, the owner says that entry is free for these volunteers, but I guess I should go submit a refund request for multiple games where I’ve been “asked” to cover the table so the next game could start or forfeit the game. Might need to see how many of our other club parents want to join in these...
Read moreThe facility is really nice. The courts are well-kept and clean. They provide basketballs for the games. They have a lot of food options, albeit a little pricey. And they have numerous televisions in their lounge area with comfortable couches to watch sporting events. That being said, I have a number of suggestions:
Put up some curtains between the courts. The whistles and buzzers from adjacent courts are frequently confusing for the players. I have seen numerous travel calls and double dribbles because a player though the whistle or buzzer had blown on their own court when it was actually an adjacent court. Curtains would provide a little bit of a buffer that i think would help.
I know there is a tremendous focus on "sportsmanship" at P2P, but the refs don't seem like they are worried about sportsmanship. They seem like they are on a power trip. I have seen coaches given a technical for simply asking questions of the referee. I have seen parents thrown out of games for questioning referees. If a parent or coach is cursing at a ref, that is one thing, but when a someone complains to a referee, why is that "unsportsmanlike?" I saw a game once where a parent was thrown out of a game not for cursing out a ref, but for asking the ref to pay attention to the fouls on both ends of the court. And then because the parent was thrown out, their son was also told he couldn't finish the game. It was the last game of his 8th grade season, and because the referee was so insecure about his own abilities as a referee, that young man didn't get to finish out the last game before high school. If the referees paid as much attention to the game as they did to the fans, you would have a better product. Imagine if high school or college referees couldn't handle being booed when fans didn't like a call. If you can't handle it, find a different job.
Stop asking parents to pay twice. We have to pay to get the teams into the league, and then we have to pay to watch them play. If i want to bring my whole family to watch my son play, it will cost me $16... every weekend... on top of what I paid to just let my son play in the first place.
I think the Power 2 Play facility has incredible potential... but it still needs some...
Read moreFor some reason this shows up with my son's name. I am Jeff Marr from the Minnesota North Metro Blazers and we recently brought our boy's team down to play in the P2P High School Camp. I have been involved in youth basketball for nearly 30 years, coaching teams, running AAU programs and tournaments, etc. This was the best experience I have ever had as a coach. We came all the way from Minnesota based upon the positive feedback we had received regarding Power2Play. Upon arrival, Michael Peterson (owner/operator) greeted our team as if he'd known the kids for years. The effort he put in to make us feel welcomed and comfortable was absolutely unprecedented. He even took us on a tour of the area with the little spare time he had. As for the tournament, it could not possibly have been run more smoothly. It is very rare that I witness the owner of an operation like this running from court-to-court to assure that things continue to flow properly. As for the officiating, I truly have never had a better experience. I could easily tell that these official were all certified/experienced. We had 3 wins and 3 losses (a couple somewhat lopsided), so I am not your typical coach who only appreciates good officiating when we win. I was equally as impressed in losses as I was in victory. We have a great many opportunities to play in the Minneapolis area, but will make it a priority to get to Windsor, CO for what I consider the ULTIMATE experience. Out of curiosity, I read through some of the reviews (most of which are very positive). It is unfortunate, however, in the youth sports atmosphere that it is truly impossible to please some folks. I witnessed Michael handling a very disruptive parent/coach and can attest to the calm, poise and respectful attitude he displayed in dealing with the situation. Most places we play, we are fortunate if the owner even graces us with his/her presence, let alone handle just about every situation that comes up personally. I also noticed that Michael takes the time to reply to every single comment - either positive or negative. Keep up the great work!!!!! Hope to be...
