This is a relatively easy trail to access one of the most spectacular views in the Southland. I say relatively because it is by no means easy, just a lot easier than the ski hut trail. Devil's Backbone itself is a little hairy, so if you're afraid of heights, don't even try it. I have done this hike in summer and early fall. It is quite exposed and can be very hot, however the summit will likely be windy and cool. Pack a jacket for comfort at the top.
