Middle Cove Beach is a gorgeous spot just outside St. John’s — rugged cliffs, rolling waves, and those classic North Atlantic views that make Newfoundland so special. It’s a great place to go for a walk, have a small beach fire in the evening, or just sit and take in the sound of the surf.
That said, it’s definitely not a swimming beach — the water is cold year-round, and the waves can be rough. The beach is rocky rather than sandy, so sturdy shoes are a good idea if you’re planning to explore the shoreline or hunt for sea glass. Parking can also get busy on nice days, especially during capelin season when locals gather to watch the fish roll in.
Overall, Middle Cove is worth a visit for the views and atmosphere rather than a full beach day. It’s wild, beautiful, and unmistakably Newfoundland — bring a sweater, a camera, and an appreciation for the Atlantic’s power.

Relaxing. Camp fire. Kids friendly on a sunny warm day.great for rock hunting on the beach. I visited in the afternoon to experience the afternoon campfire. We arrived at 8 pm and could count about 12 fire 🔥along the and more people were coming to get set up. There were kids playing around in the sand, families making smores, some were listening to there favourite music 🎶 and othe were jus relaxing at there Beach fire. If you are planning to have a beach fire get your firewoods, firestarter, smores, hotdogs, water, juice, chips and a few friends. The beach is pet-friendly and a great place to bring kids. This is a public space with trial and signage. In the evening or busy time you will often see safety personal in the parking lot and on the beach.

My visit to Middle Cove Beach in St. John’s was an absolute delight! Just a 10-minute drive from downtown, this stunning beach offers soft sand, rocky shores, and breathtaking Atlantic views. The atmosphere is perfect for families, with kids playing in the shallow waves and locals roasting marshmallows by fire pits at dusk. I was thrilled to witness the capelin roll in early summer, a unique Newfoundland experience! The beach is clean, with plenty of space for picnics and relaxing. The dramatic cliffs and crashing waves make it a photographer’s dream. Despite the chilly water, the vibrant scenery and friendly vibe make Middle Cove Beach a must-visit gem in St. John’s!

Came here 4 days in a row in August, 2025. I was visiting during a heat wave and this was a 5 mins drive from where my husband was working.
It’s a dog friendly beach, lots of family, great spot to spend the day or even just to quickly cool off.
I should mention that I did see what I believe was a lion’s mane jellyfish near the shore —
So keep your eyes out. This didn’t stop me, nor the local from going in.
Lots of the locals were also great at finding starfish, showing the kids, then releasing them back in the ocean.
Cold water, but crystal clear!
There’s lots of parking, which becomes limited at peak hours on peak days — but I always found a spot.

This is one of the favourite beaches for the east coasters. There are parking spots available, but they have been blocked due to the social distancing regulations since covid. Cars can now be parked along the road leading to the parking area. On a nice warm day, it usually bustles with families and hikers starting off on the Silver Mine head path. The black sand beach has spread out pebbles and can be a nice spot for a light picnic. There is a waterfalls which freezes during peak winters. The frozen waterfalls can be reached by a short walk along the right side of the beach.

Beautiful location. Beach isn't sand, lots of smooth rocks. This is where Terry Fox collected a bottle of Atlantic Ocean water that he planned to dump into the Pacific Ocean when he completed his run. Worth visiting. Very limited parking.

Beach was amazing. Had a bonfire and all. Was a cold night because of the wind. But you'd be warm if your fire was well fed and maintained. Several other bonfires were lit also but no one was close enough to be over bearing to the other.

Absolutely stunning interaction with nature at its wildest and purest! The smell of the salt air, the thundering sound of the surf, and the crisp fresh air on your face is an experience everyone should have! Definitely worth a visit!

Absolutely breathtaking! It's the spot where Terry Fox collected water from the Atlantic that he had planned on pouring into the Pacific once he completed his trek across Canada. Parking is difficult but it is definitely worth it!

Was at one time part of a small fishing and farming community.
Richard Harris, Bo Derek graced the shoreline for the filming of the movie Orca.
Today a spot for a quiet fire with friends.
