Beautiful church with the backdrop of Mt. Banahaw. It has a spacious plaza in front of the Church where visitors could park and relax while enjoying the surroundings. Standing in the plaza looking north, you could see Laguna de Bai and the mountains of Rizal in the distance due to the elevation of the town. Behind the church is a very close view of Mt. Banahaw, which adds to the relaxing atmosphere of the place.
The church interior is beautiful with an antique retablo in the sanctuary surrounded by brick walls. It is a perfect place to pray and reflect.

Built in 1646, this church is known for its red bricked facade and baroque style architecture. When you go to Liliw, aside from the view, there is a parking lot in front of it and it charge 20 pesos for parking. There is also a toilet at the back of the church that charges 5 pesos.
Walking distance from the church are the stores of what Liliw is famous for, tsinelas, which cost around 300 pesos.
If you are a Catholic or loves the old architectural design then this is a good place to visit.

One of the great Spanish-era Churches. Liliw / St John The Baptist Church stands proud at the center of Liliw, Laguna. Serving as both a communal space and as a symbol of Filipino community and religiousness. I definitely recommend travelers to pay a visit to the site, to reflect, and to pray. Both the interiors and exteriors are grand and scenic and stand as testaments to the Catholic Church and the Filipino people standing the test of time.

Improved a lot since we visited this place in 2015. We had pilgrimage this 2024, it was a sunny yet windy.
CR is small but clean, there's a donation box thus someone ensure it is well maintained. Church is big and very beautiful. Of course, after church visit, the street beside is has an alley of the cheapest yet fashionable and strong (value for money)slip-ons, shoes etcc.

We were on our way to Liliw Laguna when we had a brief stop at Nagcarlan. Since the town is synonymous to its underground cemetery, we decided to drop by to look around.
I was already familiar with the place as I have been there 20 years ago. But as we entered the Chapel, I was surprised to hear an unfamilar choir piece coming from the catacomb. I thought they installed speakers below and played recorded Latin or Italian music to give an eerie effect to the visitors. At first, my companions were hesitant to go down the catacomb partly because of the music.
But being familar to the place, I came in first to encourage my companions to follow me. Surprise, there were teenagers below singing. Apparently, they are members of a choir. We looked around while they were singing, and searched for the oldest crypt based of date of birth and death of those buried. As the catacomb was small, only around 10 x 5 meters, we sat on the stairways and listened to the singing teens. When they finished their piece, they softly talked among themselves oblivious of our presence. Then, I asked, "are going to sing again? Co'z were waiting." They giggled.
Their voices were enchanced by the walls of the underground cemetery. And who knows, the souls of those buried there were joining them, rejoicing at the heavenly music.
Before they started a new piece, I asked them where they are from. San Pablo City. I asked them what was the title of the song they were singing. They said it's "Ili-ili." Is that an Italian or Latin song, I asked aloud, thinking about one of the seven last phrases of Jesus: Eli Eli lama sabachtani. No, it's a Capampangan song, they said. Later, I theorized that it's a lullabye. When letter "E" preceded by "H," Capampangans drop the H. So it must be Hele-hele, or lullabye in Tagalog. I confirmed my theory through Youtube.
They sang a Mass song and Anak before we left the Chapel and proceeded to the museum located at the left side of the park.

The only underground cemetery in the country
📍 Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery
Bambang, Nagcarlan, Laguna
National Historical Landmark and Museum
It was built in 1845 under the supervision of Franciscan priest, Fr. Vicente Velloc as a public burial site and its underground crypt exclusively for Spanish friars, prominent town citizens and members of elite Catholic families.
During the Philippine Revolution, the cemetery served as a meeting place of revolutionary leaders of the Katipunan in 1896. Pedro Paterno and Gen. Severino Taiño of the "Maluningning" command held a meeting at the cemetery where they planned the historic Pact of Biak-na-Bato in 1897. It also served as hideout for Filipino leaders during the Philippine–American War and of guerillas in World War II.
The Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery was declared as a National Historical Landmark by virtue of Presidential Decree no. 260, date August 1, 1973 with amendments by Administrative Order 1505, dated June 11, 1978. Since the declaration, no more burials were allowed in the cemetery. It underwent renovations before it was again opened to the public during the unveiling of the marker on October 24, 1981. The oldest tomb is dated 1886 while the last interment was in 1982 when it was formally declared as a National Historical Landmark

The feels about this cemetery are nostalgic, serene, and creepy, but in a good way. Tombs there were not updated anymore, as the last entry were in 1960s, more than half a decade ago. But the place was well-maintained, which makes it more than worth it to visit.
Two ways you can commute: from Santa Cruz City, Laguna or from San Pablo, Laguna. For the former, just be on the Pedro Guevarra St. in Santa Cruz, where the fastfood chains lie, jeeps there bound to Nagcarlan should pass there. For the latter, you can ride a jeep in the San Pablo Fire Station, where jeeps there bound to Nagcarlan-Liliw should be accessible.

Another historical landmark in Laguna is the Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery. It is a burial site which is 15 meters below a small chapel; a chapel which was designed for funeral masses in 1845 by Franciscan Priests lead by Fr. Vicente Velloc. In the Philippines, burial sites are situated in different spots, like hanging in Ifugao, placed inside the cave in Palawan and Cagayan, and concrete crypt (in the modern era). This burial site is unique because of its architectural design and purpose.

It is a National Historical Landmark.
The newly rehabilitated Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery is a historic place at the foothills of Banahaw. It has become a center or a hideout for revolutionaries during the battle for independence from Spain in the 19th century, and during World War II.
The underground catacomb is small, albeit cool.
It also has a museum beside it to which can give you a glimpse of its significance and how the Historic Commission rehabilitated it.

We chose one of the many companies around to do our tour. This one had a restaurant that you could order from so that your food was ready after the tour (not included in the price). They also had showers available to change in after the tour so make sure to bring an extra set of clothes as you will get wet. The boat ride was quite long - approximately 8km both ways. The return journey was much faster because it goes with the current. You don’t do any rowing as the people from the company do the work for you. Be ready to give them a tip as they work really hard during the entire journey and assists you in any way possible by taking pictures, answering questions, etc. This is a really adventurous experience and is not for the lighthearted as there were a couple of dangerous moments whilst going up the river. The views along the way will make it worth it though and the waterfall is breathtaking. When you get there, you sit on a raft that’s immersed in water and the workers there will pull the raft directly under the water of the waterfall.
Tldr: absolutely amazing experience

Pagsanjan Falls, is the famous waterfalls in the Philippines, is ocated in Laguna.
We took the wooden canoe ride, with skilled boatmen that navigated it in narrow, rocky streams. The ride was about one to one and a half hours with beautiful scenery throughout the river. The final stop brings you to the breathtaking three-tiered waterfall, we took the bamboo raft to go behind the cascading water into the Devil’s Cave, it was amazing and worth the ride. I highly recommend this tour.
The water is cool and inviting, perfect for a quick dip after the adrenaline-filled boat ride. While the experience is unforgettable, it’s best to visit during the dry season (December to May) to avoid strong currents and heavy rainfall. Be prepared for additional fees for boat rentals and tips for the boatmen, as their skill and effort are truly impressive.
Overall, Pagsanjan Falls is a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The combination of thrilling rapids, lush scenery, and the magnificent waterfall makes it a truly memorable experience.

Pagsanjan Falls is a must-visit! This waterfalls is a staple tourist attraction in Laguna for a very long time and only now did I visit it.. it was a great experience.
It's not only the waterfalls, it is the whole journey. There are two ways you can choose: the walking trail or riding the rapids / boating.
Please choose the boating. The ambiance of the view along the river is precious and serene. You also get to experience the rapids - which is not too extreme - but the boatmen are the heroes. You'll also pass by mini falls along the way (depends on the weather)
The falls itself is amazing. They do offer rafting so you can go inside the waterfalls. It was safe, fun and thrilling. Not to mention, very cold!
Please do tip the boatmen.. you would know why if you see how they sore their muscles for the rapids.
There are so many tour groups who offers the experience, just make sure it is legit and wont overprice you. As for safety, we saw tourists who are surprisingly in their 50s to 70s. We were with a kid when we came.

Post-Easter visit, it was the perfect time—not too busy. Booked an all-inclusive trip via Mason’s Baluarte Resort (walk-in, signposted from the road), hassle-free and paid in cash.
The tour started at 9 AM and lasted about 2 hours. After a safety briefing, we were provided with helmets, life vests, and boat cushions (a must!). The skilled and friendly boatmen worked hard navigating to the stunning Pagsanjan Falls. Along the way, we stopped for drinks, photos, and videos.
The water was clean, and we swam while waiting for a turn on the bamboo raft, which included 10 minutes at the cave behind the falls.
An incredible experience and a must-do outside of Manila.
Tips ❣️Wear swimwear, bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and note that this isn’t suitable for those with mobility issues. Boats hold 2-3 people, so confirm weight limits if needed. Free parking and restrooms available at the resort.

During our stay at 88 Hot Spring Resort, we decided to join a tour they recommended, and it turned out to be the best experience of our trip. The tour cost 2,150 PHP per person, which included lunch and a shuttle service to Pagsanjan Falls, and it was absolutely worth it.
The journey itself was already exciting, but the real adventure began when we got on the canoe guided by two incredibly hardworking boatmen. They carefully navigated through the river’s rapids, steering us over rocks. It was amazing to watch how much effort they put into ensuring our safety while making the ride thrilling and smooth.
The scenery along the way was breathtaking. We rode on a raft that took us right under the falls, where the cool water splashed over us—it was both thrilling and refreshing.
Everything about the experience felt like being transported to a hidden paradise.
