🏛️ National Juneteenth Museum – Fort Worth, Texas, USA
📌 Basic Info: • Name: National Juneteenth Museum • Location: Fort Worth, Texas, USA • Year: 2021 • Client: Juneteenth Museum • Typology: Cultural 🧡 • Size: 7,061 sqm / 76,000 sqft • Status: Design Phase 🧭 📜 Project Overview: The National Juneteenth Museum, championed by “Grandmother of Juneteenth” Ms. Opal Lee, is dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of freedom rooted in Juneteenth. On June 17, 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law alongside Ms. Lee, establishing June 19 as a federal holiday. This day commemorates the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation and the liberation of the last enslaved African Americans in Texas and beyond on June 19, 1865. 🇺🇸✊ 🎨 Design Concept: Located in Fort Worth’s historic Southside—a community divided by the I-35W highway in the 1960s and one of the most underserved areas—the museum will serve as a national and global hub for Juneteenth education, preservation, and celebration. It will host exhibitions, dialogues, and events exploring the meaning of freedom for African Americans. The design emphasizes cultural and economic sustainability while acting as a catalyst for renewed vitality. 🌱🏗️ ✨ Key Features: • Rooftop Design: The undulating roof forms ridges, peaks, and valleys of varying heights, culminating in a central “nova”-shaped courtyard. 🌟 • Public Courtyard: The central courtyard symbolizes a new chapter where African Americans envision a more just future. A five-point star engraved at its heart represents freedom in Texas and across the U.S. 🇺🇸✊ • Entrances: Five street entrances and two covered “portals” lead directly into the courtyard and main gallery, welcoming visitors with warm, vibrant colors. 🚪🎨 • Materials: Extensive wood structures, polished concrete, and terrazzo floors create visual continuity between interior and exterior. 🪵🧱 🌍 Sustainability & Community: Designed in close collaboration with the Fort Worth community, the museum aims to promote cultural and economic resilience. It will include immersive galleries, a business incubator 🧑💼, a food hall featuring local vendors 🍽️, a flexible black-box space 🎭, and a theater—all contributing to balanced and sustainable development. 👥 Design Team: • Partners-in-Charge: Bjarke Ingels, Douglass Alligood, Daniel Sundlin • Project Manager: Linus Saavedra • Project Leader: Alvaro Velosa #MuseumDesign #Juneteenth #CulturalLandmark #PublicArt #FortWorth #ArchitectureLovers #SocialJustice #BlackHistory #InclusiveSpaces #VisitMuseums 🖤🙌✨
