🇫🇷 Must-Visit in France: Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon
Perched atop Fourvière Hill, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière towers over the city, offering a spectacular panoramic view of Lyon 🌆 Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it’s said she saved Lyon from the 1643 plague. A small chapel was built in gratitude, and a gilded statue of Mary was added in the mid-19th century to mark the 200th anniversary. Each early December, Lyon lights up with candles to thank Mary—this is the "Fête des Lumières" (Festival of Lights) ✨ In 1998, Lyon’s historic center (including the basilica) was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I’ve visited Fourvière Hill twice: once hiking alone, and once with classmates via a funicular, led by our teacher 🚠 🚗 Getting There Take the metro to "Vieux Lyon" station, then catch the funicular toward "Fourvière." Walk up via Escaleras Basílica Fourvière—start with long stone steps, then wind through roads. Or take a scenic route through Parc des Hauteurs and Le Jardin du Rosaire to enjoy gardens along the way 🌿 🏛️ Exterior & Architecture Designed by architects Bossan and Sainte-Marie Perrin, the basilica blends Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine styles. Four 48-meter towers symbolize virtues: Prudence (northeast), Temperance (southeast), Force (northwest), and Justice (southwest). A gilded Mary statue crowns the (bell tower), while a bronze St. Michael (spear in hand) makes the basilica a symbol of Lyon’s history and culture ⚔️ 🔍 Rooftop Tour (Highly Recommended!)
