🇺🇸 Half-Day Trip to Leavenworth, WA

Leavenworth is a famous Bavarian-style village in Washington State. If you're coming from the Vancouver direction, after passing Highway 202, turn left onto US-2 and drive through the national forest for about 1-2 hours. The road conditions are great, and the weather is pleasant! 🚗💨 This town is especially known for its German beer 🍺 and pork knuckles. If you're planning a longer stay, you can search for accommodations in Leavenworth—there are even nearby ski resorts! ⛷️ The themed streets are beautifully designed with great attention to detail, somewhat reminiscent of ancient water towns in China. The village isn’t very large—only about 30-40 buildings in total—so you can easily explore it all in just over an hour if you’re strolling casually. Now, let’s talk about the German pork knuckle 🤔 First, not every restaurant serves it, which was surprising. Second, the servers at the restaurant we visited were actually from Germany—likely young people on working holiday visas with European accents. They weren’t unfriendly, but service felt a bit inexperienced. We chose to sit outside since the indoor area was too stuffy. Unfortunately, the kitchen was understaffed. We ended up waiting over half an hour until after the sun went down and the mountain wind picked up 😅… When the pork knuckle finally arrived, we weren’t provided with scissors ✂️—and the steak knife couldn’t cut through the extremely crispy skin. We had to ask multiple times before getting scissors. Even then, the skin was so hard that cutting it was a struggle. Eating it required to avoid cutting your mouth or tongue—almost like chewing glass 🥲. I haven’t been to Germany, but I’ve tried German pork knuckles elsewhere, and this wasn’t what I expected. Not sure how to rate it—let’s just call it an experience. If you’ve had authentic German pork knuckle before, feel free to share your thoughts! This plate cost $43 🔪. Beer ranges from $8-12, and sausages/hot dogs are around $9-17. Anyway—still glad I checked this famous spot off my list! ✅ Rating: 4/5 ⭐ Beautiful scenery, comfortable weather, not too crowded, and fairly affordable. The one point deduction is for slow service and underwhelming dining experience. 🅿️ Helpful Tip: Most tourist parking spots are paid, but you can park for FREE in front of City Hall—there are around 20+ spaces. It shouldn’t be hard to find a spot outside of peak season. From there, it’s only a 5-minute walk into the village. If you’re staying overnight, hotels offer free parking. The area is safe and friendly! 👍 #Leavenworth #GermanVillage #WashingtonState #TravelUSA #PNWTravel #FoodReview #DayTrip #TravelTips
