🇺🇸 Visited a Cuban-owned LA on Thanksgiving! 🦃🍮
So I recently discovered that an out-of-town friend specifically asked a buddy to bring her two boxes of Porto’s from LA — calling it an “LA specialty.” I was so curious: a dessert spot in the US that suits the Chinese palate? And it’s right here in LA? I’ve lived here over a year and had no idea! I looked up the nearest location — close to a Costco — and since it was Thanksgiving weekend and even my homebody friend A felt like going out, we decided to check it out. A said he’d heard of Porto’s too and that his school often orders catering from there. When we arrived, we were surprised by how huge the shop was — and the prices were unbelievably affordable. A even asked me, “How do they make money selling things this cheap?” My guess: high volume 🧁💸 We ordered based on 小红书 recommendations: 🥔 Potato Balls 🧀 Cheese Roll 🍰 Napoleon Slice (sold out 😢, so we got carrot cake instead) ☁️ Little Comma-Shaped Pastry (a cute white dessert I picked on a whim) A, who hadn’t had Cuban food in ages, spent a while browsing online before settling on a sandwich. As for me — it was my first time trying Cuban food! We originally planned to take everything to go, but the place was so spacious with plenty of seating. While A waited for his sandwich, I started snapping photos 📸 — and then we dug in. We were pleasantly surprised — the Potato Balls were savory, filled with seasoned meat, and so tasty while still warm! They’re more like a breakfast or main dish than a dessert. A’s sandwich was also delicious — soft yet crispy bread and flavorful fillings. And the best part? None of the desserts were overly sweet — I ended up finishing them one by one without feeling overwhelmed. Next time, we’re definitely trying the Napoleon slice (the one that sold out) and getting more of those amazing potato balls! #LALife #HiddenGemDesserts #PortosBakery #CubanFood #NotTooSweet #LAEats 🥐✨🥰
