100 City Walk Routes|14/100|Historic Richmond, VA
Richmond, Virginia, is a mid-sized city easily accessible by train from the East Coast 🚆, about a two-hour drive from Washington, D.C. My childhood best friend once studied here, so I was lucky enough to spend some wonderful time exploring the city with her. 💖 ▪️ The Poe Museum 🖋️ If you, like me, are deeply fascinated by Edgar Allan Poe, you must visit this museum! In addition to exhibits of Poe’s manuscripts and letters ✉️, there is a beautiful garden 🌸 and many fearless black cats 🐈⬛. From the museums and former residences, I feel like Poe is the American equivalent of Lao She—everywhere seems to have a former residence of his, such as in Baltimore and Philadelphia, which I’ve shared in previous city walk routes. 🏘️ ▪️ Virginia State Capitol 🏛️ As one of the oldest and most historically significant states in the U.S. (think of how many founding fathers came from Virginia 🇺🇸), Virginia boasts some of the nation’s oldest grand buildings. Its State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson and is open to the public for free exploration. The architecture is classical and stunning both inside and out. ✨ ▪️ White House of the Confederacy 🕰️ During the Civil War, Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate states (replacing Montgomery). The Confederate White House was established here. This museum is located behind a hospital 🏥 and requires advance reservations. It houses many artifacts and documents from the Civil War era. 📜 ▪️ Brown’s Island 🌉 This is a perfect place for a stroll and river views! It features a wooden boardwalk bridge (so avoid stiletto heels—guess who learned the hard way 😅) called the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge. The nearby riverside park is great for walking, running, or cycling 🚴♀️, and the river views at sunset are truly breathtaking. 🌅 In summary, Richmond is a small city well worth a visit for history enthusiasts. Additionally, Carytown is full of small restaurants, cafes ☕, and shops—a great place to explore, with its red-brick roads adding so much charm! 🧱✨ #RichmondVA #HistoricTravel #CityWalk #PoeMuseum #VirginiaHistory #TravelUSA #SollTravel
