A Cozy Japanese Spot in Alamo Heights – Perfect for a Quiet Chat

This lunchtime, a colleague took us to Osaka Japanese Steak & Sushi, located in the Alamo Heights area 🍣🏡. It’s a bit further from downtown, but as those familiar with SA know — Alamo Heights is one of the pricier zip codes around, filled with charming old houses and lovely streets to wander. We arrived on a weekday around noon — the restaurant was quiet, with even the teppanyaki section empty 😌. The cushioned booths along the wall were comfy and perfect for a relaxed meal and light conversation. 👩‍🍳 Service was prompt and friendly — we barely waited. It was my first time, but my colleagues already knew the menu well. One swears by their ramen 🍜, while another thinks it’s “terrible” 😂. Fueled by curiosity, I decided to try it myself — let’s see what the fuss is about! 👩🏻‍⚖️ 🍜 Spicy Chicken & Chashu Ramen – Verdict: Not great 🥲. The egg was overcooked, the broth and veggies had a strong onion flavor (not the good kind), and the noodles were just average. 👩‍🍳 My colleague always orders the Teppan-grilled steak + Cucumber Cream Cheese Sushi 🥩🥒 — she says it’s consistently good. The fried rice also looked tasty and freshly made. 🍱 Chicken Katsu Bento Box – This I liked! It came with: • Miso soup (decent) • Chicken katsu – crispy outside, juicy inside (portion could be bigger) • 2 gyoza + 4 California rolls + side salad + steamed rice Everything was well-prepared, and each item tasted good ✅. Next time I’ll try upgrading the rice to fried rice! Definitely would order this bento again. 🥤 After lunch, we grabbed a carbonated drink from Swig nearby (guava-orange flavor) — refreshing and not too sweet. It’s become quite popular among our coworkers lately.
