A Great Place for a Stroll: Heinz Memorial Chapel
๐Heinz Memorial Chapel is a distinguished non-sectarian chapel gifted to the University of Pittsburgh by the H.J. Heinz family. Dedicated in 1938, this chapel is not only a significant part of the university's campus but also a historic landmark in Pittsburgh. With its neo-Gothic architecture, the chapel mirrors the style of European chapels and stands as a testament to the region's rich history.๐ ๐The chapel hosts approximately 1,000 events annually, including religious services, weddings, classes, lectures, concerts, memorial services, and guided tours. It is open daily throughout the year except for university holidays, welcoming over 100,000 participants in various activities. The Heinz family's philanthropy continues to support the chapel financially, ensuring its ongoing maintenance and accessibility.๐ ๐ญOne of the most striking features of the chapel is its 23 exquisitely detailed stained glass windows designed by Charles J. Connick, depicting 391 sacred and secular figures representing religion, history, medicine, science, and the arts. The 73-foot transept windows are among the tallest in the world and uniquely feature an equal number of women and men. All visible wood in the chapel, including its two 800-pound entrance doors, is oak. The wrought iron work, including lanterns, door fittings, stair railings, candlesticks, and the altar cross, was created by Samuel Yellin, who also designed the metal work in the Cathedral of Learning and most of the metal work in Pittโs Nationality Classrooms.๐ญ ๐ญHeinz Memorial Chapel is a popular site for religious and memorial services, concerts, guided tours, and weddings. Each year, the chapel hosts between 170 and 190 weddings, which are restricted to Pitt students, alumni, and other affiliates, as well as employees of H.J. Heinz Co. The Heinz Chapel Choir, an a cappella choir consisting of Pitt students, regularly performs at the chapel.๐ญ #Pittsburgh #Pittsburgh #USATravel #DCAround #NewYorkAround #PittsburghFood #PittsburghShopExploration #PittsburghTravel
