🏡 A Home for an Independent Mother from 100 Years Ago
Located in Los Angeles, Hollyhock House is the first LA commission by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. 🌸 The house is named after the hollyhock flower, the favorite of its original owner, Aline Barnsdall—an oil heiress and a fiercely independent single mother. Throughout the house, you’ll see decorative elements inspired by the hollyhock: atop the columns, along the second-floor exterior frieze, and woven into subtle details. 🏛️✨ The owner also had a deep love for Mayan culture, so Wright incorporated ancient geometric motifs, blending them seamlessly with his unique philosophy of organic architecture. The result is a harmonious flow between interior and exterior, nature and structure. 🌿📐 This time, I chose the self-guided tour. At the entrance, you can pick up a booklet with detailed explanations and explore freely. 📖🗺️ Each room also has a docent available to answer questions and chat—a very thoughtful setup! 🏡 The house sits on a hilltop, with a wide, open lawn right out front. Even if you don’t tour the interior, you can drive up for a picnic, enjoy the breeze, or just daydream. 🧺💨 The view faces directly toward the Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Sign! 🎬🌄 They also host occasional events—check the official website for updates. 🎟️ Be sure to book your ticket in advance online! ⏳💻 #HollyhockHouse #FrankLloydWright #LosAngelesArchitecture #LAPhotoSpot #LATourism #LALife #LAExploration #OrganicArchitecture #HistoricHomes #CaliforniaCulture #ArchitectureLovers #DesignInspiration #WrightInLA #HilltopViews #PicnicDay #MotherOfIndependence
