A Refreshing Hong Kong-Style Cafe Experience in San Diego
Last week, I finally visited Mom Kitchen, a Hong Kong-style cafe that opened last year in Mira Mesa. The shop is small with simple and bright decor, and you can get a seat without waiting. I’d noticed it was almost full every time I passed by recently, so I decided to give it a try~ The overall vibe reminded me of a "light version" of a Hong Kong-style cafe, like those you’d find in domestic airports—not exactly memorable, but a reliable spot for a simple meal when you’re in the area 🍽️ 🌟 Recommended Dishes: 1️⃣ Curry Fish Balls 🍛 The fish balls themselves were average, but the curry seasoning was incredibly authentic! The rich, spicy curry sauce with a hint of coconut milk instantly brought back memories of Hong Kong street food 🌆 2️⃣ Shrimp and Pork Wontons 🥟 The broth was light and natural, without an overpowering artificial flavor. Each wonton was generously stuffed, with visible chunks of fresh shrimp inside 🍤 👉 So-So Dishes: 1️⃣ Hainanese Chicken Rice 🐔 It came very close to being great: the chicken was tender, the skin wasn’t greasy, and it was even deboned. The rice also had a lovely aroma from the chicken broth~ However, it didn’t quite reach "wow, this is amazing" levels 😊 2️⃣ Pineapple Bun 🍍 As a pineapple bun enthusiast, I felt the bread wasn’t fluffy enough, and the crispy crust could have been thicker. At five dollars, it’s not expensive, so it’s worth a try 💰 I was tempted to order the roast duck and char siu, but something about places with roasted meats hanging by the entrance feels more convincing~ I’ll have to try them next time! ✌️ #HongKongCafe #SanDiegoFood #MomKitchen #FoodReview #SimpleMeal #CurryFishBalls #Wontons #HainaneseChickenRice
