Alaska Independent Travel Guide Part 2
Alaska Independent Travel Guide Part 2: Fairbanks + Arctic Circle Edition Continued from the previous part ๐๏ธ Morning Snowmobiling We were given overalls/neck covers, only our eyes showing ๐โ๏ธ. You need a driverโs license to operate, but itโs simpler than driving โ just twist the right handle for throttle, stop when released, left hand doesnโt need to brake. After a brief training and a few practice laps, we followed the guide for about 30 minutes โฑ๏ธ. The guide led at a moderate pace. Riding through snow-covered spruce forests at sunrise was incredibly beautiful ๐ฒ๐, even though we were frozen stiff ๐ฅถ. ๐ฝ๏ธ Lunch at Aurora Crepe Had the Peking duck wrap set and braised beef noodles โ just okay ๐. ๐ Afternoon at Santa Claus House A large souvenir shop ๐๏ธ. Didnโt get the moose poop fridge magnet ๐ฉ๐งฒ, but we mailed ourselves a postcard ๐ฎ. ๐ First Aurora Chase at Night Forecast KP was 1, no clouds โ๏ธ. Drove to Murphy Dome ๐๏ธ โ right after parking, we saw it! Then it swirled and spread across the whole sky โ incredibly lucky โจ๐. 3๏ธโฃ Drive from Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle Landmark ๐ Almost no other cars, no signal ๐ต. We immersed ourselves in stunning, peaceful scenery all along the way ๐ฃ๏ธโค๏ธ. ๐ Dinner at Seoul Gate Ordered grilled mackerel and budae jjigae (army stew) ๐ฒ โ both tasty but prices were a bit steep ๐ฐ. ๐ฆ Morning Reindeer Walk My favorite activity ๐ฅฐ! The guide shared some reindeer facts, then we walked through the forest holding the reins ๐ฒ๐ฆ. Apparently the female reindeer is the leader; the one I led in the middle was super impatient, constantly nudging the younger deer in front ๐ . ๐ฆ Lunch at Chowder House Crab roll and garlic shrimp were good โ the garlic sauce with soft bread was amazing! ๐๐ง โจ๏ธ Afternoon at the Hot Springs & Ice Museum The museum was low value except for the Appletini served in an ice cup you can smash for a wish after drinking ๐ธโ๏ธ. Lots of online guides cover the hot springs, so I wonโt detail it โ just remember to bring your own towel, slippers, and two quarters (though the lockers were super tricky; I couldnโt get the key out so I didnโt lock it ๐ ). Fewer people in the evening, and it was so cold that frost formed in minutes โ needed extra light for photos ๐ธ๐ก. ๐ Second Aurora Chase at Night Saw them again! Went to White Mountain โ weaker than the previous night but with different shapes, still worth it ๐. ๐ท Dog Sledding Booked with Firewalker; the owners are German and super warm ๐ค. They helped take lots of photos and videos ๐ธ๐. At noon, bought king crab legs from the supermarket โ perfect with instant noodles ๐ฆ๐. ๐ Third Aurora Chase on New Yearโs Eve Saw another major outburst covering the whole sky โ truly fulfilling ๐ฅณ๐. ๐ Self-drive back to Anchorage Took the Delta Junction route โ caught a breathtaking sunset ๐ .
