Amangalla | What to eat at the cheapest Aman restaurant in the world?
After three days in Sri Lanka, I’ve been talking about wanting to try local cuisine every day, but ended up eating all my meals at the hotel.🏘️🏘️ ⛩️The local guide strongly discouraged me: “Local food is really ‘clean and hygienic’—are you sure you want to try it?”💕💕 Today I came to Galle, an ancient city with many European-style buildings from the Dutch colonial period, which remains the largest existing fortress in Asia.💗 Hidden here is an Aman hotel.✨ 🛶With a room rate of 7,000 per night and a restaurant with an average cost of 200 per person, dining here feels like a great deal no matter how you look👀👀 at it. What’s more, this restaurant serves traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.🍱🍱 I finally found authentic local food that’s truly “clean and hygienic.”🍝 I was puzzled earlier: Could this 12,800-rupee set menu for two people, with 12 dishes, be too cheap?👣 Then the food🍲🍲 arrived, and I realized this was indeed all the dishes for the table :) See? The seller is always smarter than the buyer. You can never outsmart them.🍈 The rice includes Sri Lankan steamed red rice and white coconut sambal rice.🍚🍚 There were four, five, or six different types of curry served all at once.🍋 Beetroot and carrots were shredded into salads.🥗 Fish was minced into fried balls.🥕 Small fish were fried into dried fish.🐟 Mango was made into a sweet and sour chutney.🍉 Carrots and pearl onions were pickled into achar.🥩 Old cucumber was stewed with a bunch of spices.🍞🍞 Bold spices, occasional excessive saltiness, sudden bursts of sweetness, and a jumble of soups and stews that all look more or less the same.👍 Remember this local rule when eating: Rice and curry are Sri Lanka’s heirlooms.💓💓 What’s more, this Aman is located in the 400-year-old Galle Fort, filled with colonial vibes everywhere. Dining here feels like “a distant relative from the East being entertained with the highest standard family feast by the slave owner in their courtyard.”💖 But it was still quite delicious, after all, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. 🍞As long as it’s clean and hygienic, it all tastes pretty good. #FoodExploration #SriLanka #Galle #AmanHotel #FolkFoodCriticContest #ForeignFoodLovedByChineseTasteBuds
