An Uni Lover’s Sushi Disappointment in LA 😓 Just One Word: SALTY.
Yeah… I did not see this coming 😂 If I had to use a few more words: not fresh, not worth it, not tasty, would not return. Moral of the story: don’t just trust the photos and reviews you see online! 📵 I was craving a chirashi bowl but didn’t want to drive too far. One of my backup spots in Beverly Hills was fully booked, and though this DTLA place usually recommends reservations, I called and decided to walk in. Well… the restaurant was pretty empty. At first glance, I wondered if it was Chinese-Japanese fusion—turned out to be Chinese-Korean. Honestly, I’ve had better fumakase 😂 🍣 Chirashi Bowl Only one option for $55 (the menu section was misleading). The ingredients seemed generous—amaebi, uni, tuna, otoro—with a side of nori and fried shrimp head. But the shrimp head tasted dark and greasy, probably fried in the same oil as the chicken 😑 The rice or fish (or both) were overwhelmingly salty. Could hear the couple across from me complaining through the whole meal lol. 🍣 Hand Rolls The recommended blue crab hand roll ($9) tasted like processed paste—maybe premade? I’d rather pay extra for Korean soy sauce crab from K-Town. My choice: C.U.T. hand roll ($22) with caviar, uni, tuna, and shiso. I usually love shiso and uni, but this looked unappetizing and tasted just… sad. *Note: The nori came separately to keep it crispy—you assemble it yourself. 🍴 Appetizers Uni Toast ($29) I can’t complain about the portion of uni, but it was tiny and not fresh. Looked dark, lacked sweetness and creaminess—zero joy. There was also a strange yellow sticky sauce in the middle (slow-cooked egg yolk sauce maybe?) that tasted bottled and artificial. Definitely not fresh—just pretending to be creamy. So disappointing. Korean Fried Chicken ($15) Mainly salty, nothing special. Didn’t give me that happy “junk food bliss” feeling (shoutout to Jin Cook for actually good fried chicken!). 🥤 Drink Note First time seeing such a huge bottle of Mexican Coke—and somehow it tasted worse than the regular original Coke. Baffling. 📍 Sonmari Price: $80+ per person Vibe: Got quieter as the meal went on… and not in a good way. Will not return. 🙅♀️ #LAEats #SushiFail #UniLover #LAFood #DTLA #DisappointingDining #FoodReview #AvoidThisSpot #SushiLA #FoodieWarning
