Berlin | 💯 A Perfect Score for Peruvian Cuisine!
I asked a friend who lived in Latin America to recommend a good Peruvian restaurant, and we finally decided on Rocoto, which has a stellar 4.8 rating and a modern vibe. When I saw it was fully booked until next week, I quickly called and asked for a table at 5:30 PM (pro tip: this is how you snag a spot at a popular restaurant!). Sure enough, they had availability. The menu is compact, and you can see the heavy influence of Chinese cuisine on Peruvian dishes, especially with some wok-prepared options. 🔸 Ceviche Trio: Ceviche, marinated in lime juice, is Peru’s national dish, and this trio was on the chef’s special menu. It featured classic, mixed, and Japanese fusion styles. The classic and mixed versions use the traditional lime marinade. The mixed version also included octopus and shrimp alongside corvina fish, all paired with large Peruvian corn, roasted corn, and rocoto pepper. The classic ceviche had a milky marinade, with fresh fish that was tender but not rubbery. Some friends mentioned the acidity was toned down, but I thought it was just right. The third style, Japanese fusion, had soy sauce, yuzu, and tuna, along with avocado—more like eating sashimi. If you can only choose one, go for the Classico or Mixto! 🔸 Causa Trio: Another signature Peruvian dish, Causa is typically cold mashed potatoes mixed with lime and aji amarillo sauce, usually layered like a lasagna. This trio was a bit fancier in presentation: shrimp with egg mayo, fried fish with pepper sauce, and octopus with olive cream sauce, garnished with scallions and saffron, and served with avocado puree. The spice balanced the richness of the mashed potatoes perfectly. 🔸 Grilled Octopus: The octopus was incredibly fresh, tender, and springy, served with chimichurri sauce (though the portion was small, so you might want extra) and grilled potatoes. When seafood and potatoes are this fresh, they’re simply crowd-pleasers! All three dishes were fantastic. The restaurant also offers roasted corn snacks before your meal. Next time, I might try the Chinese fusion dish Lomo Saltado. And then, head to Jones for some ice cream to finish off the evening. 💵 Average per person: €30 #BerlinRestaurantRecommendations #BerlinFoodie #GermanCuisine #BerlinDining
