Bhutan’s Amankora: 5 Resorts, Food Rated Honestly 🥢

1. I usually only post about restaurants I recommend, but this review is for travelers planning a Bhutan trip via Amankora. Let’s start with the basics: Bhutanese food leans vegetarian and spicy—tough for someone like me who loves meat and avoids heat. As a Buddhist nation, (killing animals) is prohibited, so meat is imported, making non-veggie dishes lackluster. Even their veggie dishes can’t compare to China’s delicious vegetarian cuisine. Honestly, the food alone would make me hesitate to return. That said, Amankora’s menus are diverse: lunch and dinner differ, with 3-4 options for appetizers, mains, and desserts—meat, veg, local, and Western. Over seven days, only 3-4 dishes stood out; most were average, some even underwhelming. Rumor has it Six Senses’ food is better (they poached many chefs), but I can’t confirm. 🍽️ 2. Aman Paro : The largest of the five, with the most Western options. (sadly), the burger was a letdown—the patty was mushy and unappetizing, left after two bites. Highlight? Breakfast congee, which I ordered two days in a row. Fettuccine and eggplant dishes were passable. 🍔 3. Aman Bumthang : Its eel rice bowl was a trip favorite, and breakfast omelets were decent. Bhutanese love lentils, but I found them underwhelming. 🐟 4. Aman Gangtey : Here, I had two of Bhutan’s best dishes: a beef noodle soup (similar to pho) and yak meat ravioli—so good, I ordered seconds. 🥟 5. Aman Punakha : Only desserts impressed; everything else fell flat. The pizza was a disaster—inedible after one bite. Never thought a pizza crust could be this bad. 🍕 6. Aman Thimphu : After Gangtey, this is the next best. Maybe because the king often hosts (foreign guests) here, the food steps up. Their matsutake soup and shrimp were delicious—the soup, had on day one, set a bar no other soup matched. Dinner included Bhutanese specialties: lots of small plates, little meat, but a unique (green pepper and cheese) dish—mild and tasty. 🦐 7. A quick note on Bhutanese momos (dumplings): Tried them multiple times, but they were dry and flavorless. Nepal’s momos are far better. 🍲 #AmankoraBhutan #AmanFood #BhutanTravelEats
