Boston Area | Portland, Maine: 1-Day Food, Fun & Shopping Trip

Driving from Boston to Acadia National Park, you’ll pass through Portland—the largest city in Maine. It’s just a 1.5-hour drive from Boston, and you can spend a fantastic day here: visiting lighthouses, eating lobster, and shopping for outdoor brands!(For my 3-day Acadia National Park guide, check out my other post.) Leave Boston at 8 AM, arrive at Nubble Lighthouse around 9:30 AM: A National Historic Landmark and Maine’s most popular lighthouse 🗼. 40-minute drive to Old Orchard Beach: Maine’s “Number One Beach” 🏖️. 30-minute drive to Portland:There are 3 of Portland’s most beautiful lighthouses, all within a 10-minute drive of each other: Portland Head Light: The oldest and most famous among Maine’s 65 lighthouses—you can view it from multiple angles. 🦞 Don’t miss the popular food truck Bite Into Maine in the park—home to Maine’s most delicious lobster rolls! Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse: A stunning lighthouse accessible via a stone path extending into the sea 🌊. Portland Breakwater Lighthouse: Small and cute, nicknamed “Bug Light” 🐝. Freeport Outlet:A 30-minute drive from Portland, with many outdoor brands: Patagonia Outlet (one of only 6 worldwide!) LL.Bean: The global flagship store in its hometown—huge in scale 🛍️. Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens:A 1-hour drive from Portland. Look for the 5 trolls in the garden—part of the giant sculpture series by Danish “recycled art” artist Thomas Dambo, super cute 🧌. The garden is open seasonally—check the schedule in advance. 🥘 Food Recommendations ⭐️ Luke's Lobster Portland Pier: Located at the end of the pier with stunning views. Recommend the “Trio” combo (lobster roll, crab roll, and shrimp roll) 🦐. ⭐️ Becky's Diner: Highly recommended 👍👍! Their lobster roll and Fried Lobster Platter are both amazing. ⭐️ Scales: A friend recommended their mussels and seared scallops—unfortunately, it wasn’t open when we visited. ⭐️ The Holy Donut: Famous for potato donuts. The maple bacon and sea salt chocolate flavors are great 🍩. ⭐️ ISF Trading: A seafood market next to Becky's Diner—their uni (sea urchin) is fresh and delicious 🦀. #Portland #Maine #MaineState #BostonLife #BostonAreaTrips #NewYorkArea #AcadiaNationalPark #PortlandMaine 🌟
